I been thinking about upgrading my 86 to the 91-96 style bumpers. 2 questions

The 91-96 bumpers have different body molding. You know what I mean, that black strip that runs the length of the middle of the car. Well the 84-90 have the thick black strip, where the 91-96 have the more flat style painted to match body color strip. What do I do? Put the old style strip on the newer bumper? will that work, or can I put the newer 91-96 style strip all over my whole car?

So in other words are the strips interchangeable?

thank you

I am not sure if the older strip will work on the newer bumpers, but you can replace the older strip on the doors and dog leg with the newer strip. You will have to buy the front/rear bumpers and the newer fenders. The newer fenders have the molding built in.

I've done the change over.

The body molding on an OEM rear bumper is molded on to the bumper. There is no way to take it off.

There are after market fiberglass bumpers out there that take the small moldings. This is the cheeper route.

The front bumper was expensive. I think it was about $800. Not includeding paint. You might be able to find parts on ebay. But it takes time to gather them up. The car was apart for 2 month be for I stated to buy new parts.

Email for more details....

wow thats a nice 89.

So the 91+ rear bumper molding dose not come off. but I can replace the thin 80's style strip on the doors with the new wide strips. That what you did? Or did you paint the old thin strips to match the car, to look like new strips..

The thin black molding on the door and the dogleg (small part between the door and the rear wheel) do come off. You can put the new style molding on in the same place. The newer fenders have the molding built into it.

Yes - The rear bumper molding does not come off.
Yes - You can replace the thin molding with the bigger molding. I've bought them used and new. Buy them new.
