I have a black 89 vette. The paint is in pretty darn good shape. I keep it waxed regularly as black cars need. Although, my rear bumper is completely faded and looks horrible. Do I need to take it to a pint shop, or can I somehow purchase rubber bumper paint and that would do the trick?? Any and all help would be GREAT....

I would love to post a picture........but I do not have the means to do so. I have tried many compounds and/or polishing agents, but no luck. The paint is pretty faded. I am hoping to get some advise on if I could buy some type of paint to try that out.

the reason why I asked is you may be able to wet sand the paint. When you go to compound or rougher grit, you have to do everything in stages. A light wet sand, then compound, then polishing compound, then polish, then wax is the way to do it.

For paint: It isn't like you can buy a can of paint and just spray it. It will never look right or last. You need an air compressor and air paint gun, a good place to do the job, and good paint and materials. For painting just the bumper, if you don't have any of this, it will be far cheaper taking it to a body shop.

Well, I have taken it to a body shop, and between $500-$700 seemed a little high to paint a bumper, which is why I was seeking other alternatives.

We have these mobile paint guys that go to car dealers who touch up and paint complete bumpers. We used to use them when I worked at the dealer but they are still around. They do a pretty decent job with of course flex agent. I had it done to my 5.0 and it lasted 6 years till I was hit head on. They were 50+% cheaper but we always tipped them. Maybe you can check into that in California. Worth a shot. Tey come right to your house....you can keep an eye on them.:upthumbs
Maybe someone else on the forum experienced this.

PAINT SHOP !!!!! The rear bumper cover is urethane and the paint deteriorates, causing it to appear faded. No amount of sanding, polishing, or waxing will restore it. $500 is not a bad price considering the amount of work involved to do the job right. Back up lights, tail lights, etc. must be removed to do it properly. Just had mine done by a member of our club who owns a restoration shop and it cost me $400. If it's not done right, you will never be satisfied. Just my .02.

I agree. The reason the earlier c4 bumpers fade is because they didnt clear them .They cleared everything except the bumpers. You might be able to buff them out but if the paint is original, which it sounds like it is,it is probably lifeless and too thin to work with.$500 isnt a bad price to paint the bumpers.Good luck!
