burnt smell

I hope this is OK for this forum. My 86 coupe that I bought about a year ago has a burnt smell in the interior. Everything works good and it's a stale odor. The smell doesn't get any better or worse. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on getting rid of it. I have cleaned the interior 3 or 4 times and it is still there. I hate to replace the interior because it is in good shape and I really can't afford to anyway. Charlie, I know you're not going to want to hear this, but the stale odor (is it slightly musty too?) is probably due to the insulation between the carpeting and floors is, or has at one time been, wet. Even though I sealed my floors when I redid my interior a few years back, when I removed the carpeting again this round I noticed that the matting was moist again.

I know I have no coolant leaks such as the heater core or such, but I can't find how it gets moist. Maybe it has to do with the condensing effect seeing as how the proximity of the exhaust to the tunnel is so close and the heating/cooling cycles will generate moist conditions? :confused

Odor

Last winter my wife got a used Blazer. Really nice except for the interior aroma on a hot day. A niece suggested clothes dryer softener sheets. They work better than Fabreze. I prefer the 'unscented' ones.
I think most of the aroma is in the carpets but haven't tried to remove and shampoo them yet.

Try sprinkling baking soda on the carpets, vacumn up & leave the box under the seat.

i dont know on a C4 but on the C5 if the AC dring becomes clogged it will back up into the AC and flood the passenger floor. maybe there is a leak in the AC drain tubing...but I am no mechanic.

No joke have you tried that carpet fresh stuff your wife uses in the house....
You know just FYI, But my '84 has 87k miles on it.....and it still has that new car smell.....go figure.....Guess I'm just Lucky......

Also when my vette is parked in the garage like 95% of the time, I keep the windows up...and keep 4 boxes of opened baking soda inside....always.....
