Buying a 1978 vs 1979 vette

Are you saying that you are going to buy a Vette for your kids to drive?
If so I would like to be adopted........:w :beer :_rock :Steer

I also don't see a decline in the value of Corvettes, especially one that lasted 24 years. And I would definitely choose a Vette over a Sentry. ;)

I'm going to have many, many Vettes with time. And the only non-Vette I'm going to have (for snow and other bad whether) will probably be a truck. I would want nothing else! :D

manti6, how good are you with tools? No matter how good a shape the car is in, it'll need some wrenchin'

Mine was in excellent shape when I bought it. When I finish, it'll be in darn near perfect . . . then I get to start all over again!

My sentiments EXACTLY, Page!

By the time I finish all of my prjects I'll have a "new" vette, and then I can start all over again at the begining!
Sort of like getting a new car every 10 years!

Being somewhat partial myself, I preferred the '78 PC additions over the '79. (Spoilers, air dam, seats, emblems...)

Matter of fact my old Pace Car is for sale by it's current owner as we speak. About 68K original miles (give or take) and ALL original.
If you're interested, let me know as I have plenty of pics and the car has it's own website...

I got the 78 and it was in decent condition. Very reliable and needs very minor work (mostly seats and carpet) The 78 seat is different than the 79 unless it's the pace car.

I'll give you one more thing to think about. If you want to store ANYTHING in the back, go for the 79. Unless I'm mistaken the glass raises on it. The 78 does not and it is really a pain in the butt to go shopping and put bags or anything in the back but not nearly as hard as getting to them to remove them, unless you have the tops off that is. I noticed it when I got the car but I could live with it. I got a 96 a few months later and after seeing how much easier it was on me being able to open the back, I really hate driving the 78 when I have to put anything in the back.

That said, I agree with everyone else. Not enough difference between the 2 to tell you one over the other. Get the best condition you can for the money. Any "problems" like comfort of the seat and storage will be forgotten once you get inside. If it says corvette on the back you really can't go wrong with any year.

Not to be disagreeable LT4hitsthespot, but the only C3 with lift back glass (commonly known as the hatch-back vette ;LOL ) was the 82 Collectors Edition. Early C3's (1968-1972 or 73) had removable rear glass, but its not the same.

there are No Real Collectable 74 to 82 Vettes
I would maybe disagree just a little bit--I bought my 75 roadster because it was the "last" convertible, I could not afford a really nice 68-73, and I think (hope) it will be more collectible in the future as there were fewer built than any other convertible.

Plus, I think it looks really cool!!

I don't know when if there is any difference in stock options, and I am of course quite biased, but I would say go for the '79 if you can get it loaded. I've got PB,PW,PL, cold A/C, cruise, rear defroster. Of course, you might be able to get an equivalent '78... I guess I don't know. I would definetely get one with options either way. Again, you can't go wrong. I went through the same thing last July, and I drove w/ a T-top off for the first time in months today. It was awesome!!! Those sinful thoughts I had during the winter have all went away with the warming weather.

OK, thanks for setting it straight. I thought they had changed it right after the 78 but I wasn't positive. Oh, and the hatchback thing- I knew that, but was having a BRAIN_FART moment and couldn't think of the name. That's what happens to you after 12 long hours at work.

I agree with you on the collectable thing. You can't go wrong with any C3. They've bottomed out in price and have climbed back up. Enthusiasts will always seek them out and they'll just get harder and harder to find in good shape. I couldn't afford the older ones either and have not regretted getting the 78. I probably paid just a little more than I should have but it was "THE ONE" that I wanted in my price range after looking around and The price is relevant.

Just out of curiosity (I'm almost sure I can't afford a 78 PC) what is he asking for it? Is it a manual transmission?

Thanks! :D

P.S. I never see Corvettes (mainly C3s) as collectables because that kinda gives you the image that you shouldnt' drive them. I wanna drive Vettes! :D ;)

As a proud owner of a 79 SHARK...

I can vouch for the following:

-79 seats, without doubt, fold at a point that allows much easier access than the 78 to the rear compartment.
-In 79, Chevy finally incorporated 20th century lighting with T-H on the high beams.
-79 had 1 to 1-1/2 inches more lateral cabin passenger space. Important for us big boys (and girls)!!!
-79's seats sat slightly higher due to new foam type and new slide track hardware
-79's have about 2 inches more front-to-back slide than the 78, which is nice for big and small drivers alike.
-79s have a 24 gallon gas tank.
-Purists will claim the 79 is the SHARK body style (a la Duntov's Mako Shark), even though the "Sting Ray" (two words) comprised the same basic styling through 82.

I'm a bottom line guy. At the end of the day, your choice depends upon what you want from your Corvette. Driveability, Collectibility, and Resale Value don't always go together for every Corvette lover. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. My advice? Weigh what you want and what you like, give up some to get some, and make your best deal (profound, eh?) Absolutes apply only to the purest of the purists, and most of us common Corvette lovers don't have time for that, though we all wish that we did!!!

You decide based on what your dream is. I strongly recommend you read Jack Smith's article in the December 29 Chicago Tribune Magazine. We don't buy features. We buy dreams. If you can't find the article, email me and I'll find it for you.

May you have countless westward, amber sunset cruises before you . . . in your 79 Corvette.

One more thing about 79s...

The 79 Corvette had the longest production run of any Vette. Production began in late August 78 and ran through September 79 . . . 14 months to be sure. That's why the 53,807 number is deceiving when compared to other "Model Year" runs.

If you're not lying to make us feel good Quiksilver, thanks for bringing that to my attention. You hear that collectors??? Those numbers are deceiving, so my '79 is worth at least as much as an original '69 big block. Keep that in mind.

Holy Cow!!

LOL!! I wouldn't make quite that big a leap, Cream! I wouldn't compare my 79 to my 68 big block any day! But the length of the 79 production run is seldom noted, so it seems noteworthy, at least.

splitting hairs

Ahh... I went through the same thing years ago trying to decide which year(s) to buy. My advice? Get what you want! and get good condidtion.

The reason for this?.... These cars are a royal pain in the A**! At the end of the day it has to be worth the trouble and expense. In other words, get the color you want. If you really want a convertable get that too. To me the little details between years doesn't matter much day to day.

As for 78-82 those are better years to buy if you plan to drive the car alot! They come with modern options like:

Cruise control
Power locks
Sport mirrors
Car alarm integrated to door lock
etc. etc.

I miss these things on my '72. And a 78-79 would be a few years newer too! (maybe more reliable)

And last but not least... cheaper and easier to find. Collectable is nice but ....

Black 1979 vette

I have my heart set on finding a 1979 black exterior - tan interior automatic transmission Vette that is in very good condition. Anyone know of any possibilities out there? Thanks!

I don't know right off my mind of a Vette as you speak, but I'm still looking right now and if I find a Vette like the one as you speak of, I'll definitely send a PM your way.

Good luck in the search! :D
