I am considering buying a 1999 C5. What problem areas should I be looking for. As a former late model C4 owner I expect this car to have some problems. I would just like to know what are the most common problems and how many would have been solved by recalls. Any help would be great. thank you!!!

Another good place to browse for info is the Tech Center Knowledgebase here:

Some common problems that come to mind are:

- Steering Column Lock
- Seat movement under acceleration/deceleration
- Noise (rattling) from 6-spd transmission at low speed, but this is normal, if you notice it
- Musty odor coming from air conditioning at startup on hot days

Steering Column Lock is the biggest issue that I can think of. You might check to see if that has been addressed on the one you're looking at.

Hope this helps,
Fred

I am the original owner of a 99 hardtop which now has 70k miles. In short, it has been a great car. There have been two recalls; one for the seatbelt retractors, and the other for the steering wheel lock issue. Other than that, the car has been trouble free. Mine is a 6 spd which produces 29-30 mpg on the highway which is where mine spends most of it's time. I even got 51k off the original runflats. Tire pressure being the key to longevity, but again, the vast majority of the miles are highway. Hope that helps.
