The speaker (aftermarket) in my '59 has died. Good riddance, I was never that happy with it anyway; sounded like crap. ALso have aftermarket radio that I'm not really thrilled about either. Questions:

Has anyone used the "Kickpanel Speaker Assemblies" from Corvette Central ? Are they easily installed ? HOw do they sound ? I assume they need to be painted as it looks like they only come in black (mine would need to be red).

I have the "Custom Autosound" (Kenwood) radio; I've been blaming the speaker (Kenwood dual Upgrade) for the crappy sound but wonder if it's the radio, or something else ? ALso would like to upgrade to a CD player, but I don't see how you can get a CD player/radio in the original hole (not wide enough for a CD). Anybody got any suggestions on that ?

Thanks for any and all comments,

Bernie O.

Bernie,
The CA radios are nothing but a hunk of junk in my opinion! I bought one for my 59, and it was so tinny sounding that I almost could not listen to it. I was using one of the dual speaker replacements that fit the original location, and attributed the awful sound to the speaker. After less than 3 hours of use, the radio died, and I pulled it out and replaced it with an off-the-shelf Sony unit with a CD from Best Buy for about $150, leaving the speaker in place. The sound is very nice, and the volume is quite sufficient for highway driving with the top down! I had to cut the console a little to install the Sony radio, but my car is a resto-mod, so this was not an issue for me.
I never sent the unit back to them for repair, and it is still sitting on the shelf in my shop, just to remind me what a piece of cr*p it is! I would never reccomend anyone ever buy a radio from these folks.

Regards, John McGraw

Barry,

I'll give you a call sometime tomorrow morning; I'll be off site for part of the day tomorrow, but should be in the office by early or mid-afternoon. SOrry I didn't get back to you earlier this week; I was supposed to be back from Montreal on Wed, but didn't get home until Thurs. and then had to work late Fri and most of Sat.

John,

Thanks for the info; sounds like you think my problem is the radio and not the speaker. Maybe I will give the speaker another try with a decent radio.

Even though my car is not #'s matching (or even close) I think I will still have a hard time convincing myself to actually cut the console. Maybe I'll try a remote CD player (in the trunk I guess is the only place to mount).

Thanks for your input,

Bernie O.
