Well, now that I got the master cylinder on my '60 straightened out the one on the '66 decided it's lacking attention. Sibling rivalry! I ordered a new master cylinder for it, the original single cylinder type. My question is, were the cap and clips supposed to be painted black as they were when I bought the car? I removed the paint as it was crinkled and the cap and clips don't look like they need paint but what's it supposed to be, painted or unpainted? The replacement offered by Zip Products is unpainted.

The cap and clips were originally painted black; it wasn't the highest-quality paint in the world, and when it started looking tacky, many owners removed the paint and preferred the appearance of the cad/gold dichromate plating that was under the paint. From a judging perspective, the low-gloss black paint is "correct".

So let it be written, so let it be done! Thanks John.

John,

Was the body of the master cylinder black as well???

I recently "freshened up" my master cylinder up without removing it.
I bought a steel brush attachment for my drill at Homeless Depot and proceeded "sand" if you will all of the old crummy looking black paint. What I couldn't get to with the drill I reached with a file and some sandpaper.

After cleaning it off, I bought a small can black rustoleum paint and with a small brush and some patience (not easy for me) I repainted the master cylinder.
It turned out great!
My clips have that gold/cad color that John speaks of.

Good luck!!

Pedro
