Help, am I getting B.S.'d by my dealer? I ordered a C-6 coupe on Nov. 21, '04. My dealer, 'Connell Chevrolet of Costa Mesa' told me it would be app. 10 - 12 weeks. O.K. I've been waiting 47 years so what's another couple of months.
Mid February I check up with the dealer for a status report. He tells me that G.M. has the order in, however, the plant has been re-tooled to make a 2-3 month run of convertibles. Any informed people out there want to enlighten me? I'd appreciate it.

I dunno... but I bet you could find one somewhere within 300 miles from you, and get the same price... just drive her home. If you really want... I'll drive her to your house for you.

BTW... Welcome to the CAC!!!

They have been building coupes all a long as they have slowly ramped up the convertible production. Even now the convertible is only about 30% of the daily build. I would say your dealer doesn't have the allocation to fill your order.

Sounds like the dealer does not have an allocation. My dealer has been quite good about keeping me posted. He even gave me a bit of tutorial on their ordering system when I placed my order.

I ordered a Z51 coupe on February 19. It didn't get picked up until the 28th. Now I have a target production week of March 21. The Z51 option was constrained at 50% for a while, but I think that disappeared from the most recent list of constraints. The only significant constraint I know about on the coupe is the 1SX option package. Orders with that option have been held for a long time. As I recall it was related to a lack of rails for the manually operated passenger seat. I think 1SX is supposed to be available in April.

Assuming you didn't order 1SX, you should probably look for another dealer and make sure they have an allocation.

So let me get something straight here. If the dealer doesn't have a the allocation and he takes your deposit, what's your next step? Call GM? Get your money back? You lost all that wait time! Tell Chevy where they can stick it? Help me out guys. I have a ragtop on order and I asked the dealer to give me an idea as to when the order will be placed in the queue and I receive no reply. I gave my deposit in good faith;they took the $ in good faith and said they put the order in. I am getting really po'd at the whole scene!

When did you ask the dealer? If they are ignoring you, get your deposit back and call Reedman-Toll in Langhorne, Pa. They are an excellent place to do business. Let me know if you need a name and number.

If the dealer did not return my calls promptly and give me a straight answer as to when he had an allocation for me, I'd get my money back and start over with another dealer. There are dealers out there that have allocations, will order a car for you promptly, and will give you the basic courtesy of a straight answer to your questions about order status.

Consider the sponsors here, or take a look at the list of supporting dealers at corvetteforum.com. From the discussion there, it is clear that a lot of people have good luck with this even if the dealer is quite a distance away. You may even find a dealer that has what you want in stock.

You can either leave your deposit with that dealer until if or when he gets an allocation or get your deposit back and order thorough a dealer that sell a large number of Corvettes every year.

Yes I dealt with a small dealer with a low corvette allocation. He gave me the best $ for my trade and took $2K off the MSRP of the Vette. Only requested $500 deposit to order. Previously talked to the "big" dealers who would give me 30% less for my trade; nothing off the MSRP and wanted $1-5K for a deposit. Big and little would not give a definitive delivery date. The "little dealer" now tells me that he has 5 more vettes on his allocation and I am number three. He just doesn't know when "my turn" will happen. Could conceivably be an August delivery. I will give the dealer one more week; he claims that he'll be talking to GM and see what he can do. The other two guys who are in front of me; one ordered his vette in Sept and the other in Jan. All of us ordered ragtops and they are mad, but willing to wait till hell freezes over. If the news sucks, I will get my deposit back and probably buy another vehicle from a manufacturer that treats its potential buyers of $60,000 vehicles with respect that we deserve! Porsche, BMW, etc? There has to be point where you say no more BS regardless of the dealer's size and vette allocation. Vettes are beautiful but not worth the aggravation and the 2nd class treatment.

I forgot to note that even if the order goes through, it won't be millenium yellow. The order was not accepted by the cutoff date. But I could always get the new 2006 yellow although nobody has a color swatch to show you what it will look like.

Of this 5 he may only get 1 or 2 convertibles or maybe none.
But you know that is not the dealer's fault! That's GM screwing with us trying to get a decent deal with a dealer for a super car and avoiding the huge dealers like Kerbeck who would sell you the car but want to "steal" your trade. I give up. Fortunately, although I really want the Vette, I am not that obsessive that I could not "really want some other big ticket, high performance automobile."

I've owned BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. I haven't found that much difference. Anytime you try to buy a car with production that is limited relative to demand, you can face the same aggrevation regardless of brand. Around here, at least, the premium brand dealers are less likely to negotiate much on price than others and often offer poor trade-in values. On popular models, order lead times can be long and unpredictable. In other words, as challenging as it can be to get your hands on a Corvette, you could very well encounter the same problem with a different brand. I certainly have.

Sounds like you are faced with a tradeoff between better delivery (sooner and more predictable with a bigger dealer) and better price (with your current dealer).

FWIW, a lot of us here "feel your pain."

I see it as GM rewarding the dealers that kept Corvette alive during the years when it was very hard to sell them. The small dealer didn't want to do the work in those years. So in a way I do see it as the dealers fault.

I would agree with you; but GM should then say to us, the consumer, that if you want a Vette, here are the dealers from whom you can buy, order, dicker, etc with confidence that you will receive the car of your choice before it loses a year's worth of value (assuming a delivery date in July/ Aug timeframe). I will let you know what my "little" dealer tells me next week.
