The don't think the wheels on my 61 have the "nubs" I have read about in the catalogs, that help keep the hub cap on.
Do I need the "nubs" to keep my "hubs" from passing me on the highway?

I lost 2 hupcaps on my 62 before I learned about "the nubs". Once I changed wheels (and paid heavy to replace the hubcaps) I have had no more issues with the hubcaps. Nubs are required!

Sorry about your hub caps. I feel your pain. Thanks for the input.

Cost of wheels? Not all that bad. New (reproduction) ones for about $100 each. Can be expensive if you want to be a purest. Worse if you have those 5 1/2" wheels (big brake option). Bargains out there if you do some shopping. For example, the 55-56 Chev had the same wheels, except (I think) they were rivited instead of welded. For driver cars a good option to go find some at a scrap yard or swap meet. I found one for $5!!!!! It was Green, but ever so straight! A good power coating, and I was good to go!

Hal.
:)

Hal Thanks for the additional info. I'll have to start hunting.

I welded nubs on my wheels with exellent results, while we are on this subject . Since i changed to radials(I know) the hubcaps creep around the wheel and bend the valve stems over any one else see this happen and have a remedy:W Thanks Steve

Can someone post a pic of what the nubs look like?

I basicly used the spot weld feature of a mig welder :D Steve

Had exactly the same issue on my '57 when I switched to my driving radials (I had two sets of original rims - one with 6.70 judging tires, one with 205/75 radials for driving); tried everything else, finally had steel valve stems installed that served as a positive stop for the wheel covers. :)

Now you got me thinking about welding in nubs :) How raised are they and how many did you weld in? I have a welder so maybe I should consider this. I am not planning on having the car judged.

I'd like to see a good pic of this too.

There are 4 of these, 90* apart. They are about 1/2" wide and 1/8" tall. I think you could smoke a good weld bead in the right spot and do the job.

Great shot! Thanks, dimensions also very helpful. Now I know what a nub looks like. :)

It's also very important to have them correctly located relative to the valve stem hole, or the four spring clips on the back of the wheel covers won't engage them; can't remember the orientation (don't have my '57 any more), but if you're going to "add" them, check out their location on an original wheel first. :)

Thanks for pointing that out John

Just looked at the nubs on my 61. They are equal distant at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock.
Center of nub to center 11.5 inches. The valve stem is midway between the nubs.
sorry it took ;me so long to look. rick.
