Does anyone know what year /month Chevy started stamping the Car's unique VIN Number on the block?
Thanks,
Clint

They started stamping the VIN with approx. car #1322 built Nov. 16 1959. Each number was stamper individually without a gang holder. The gang holder wasn't used until April 1960.

Thanks, I did not realize that some of the 59's acutally had the vehicle Serial number on the block. Did transmision stamping start the same time?
Thanks,
Clint

They were 1960 model year built in Nov. 1959.
The VIN on the trans. didn't start until the 1962 model year.

Jim,
Thank you. One more question. Is there any kind of online db that list VINs to determine if a car has been stolen or part of a scam? I am looking for a 58-59 but dont want to become a "statistic" if you know what I mean.

Also did the 59 stamping including any info about what type of Tranny a car had?

Thanks again,
Clint

There's no data base that I'm aware of.
If the motor is original, the 2 letter suffix of the assembly date stamped on the engine will tell you the HP and whether it had an auto. or manual trans.
