1966,and a 1962 thats almost complete
Well as you guys know I purchased a basket case 62 vette. It was pretty complete with all of its parts (they all needed to be restored/replated/replaced) but they were all there so I knew what I needed to do. I have viewed an ebay auction

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4532571727&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

And it seems to show a metal plate that mounts to the chrome horseshoe to mount the licence plate to. I DONT HAVE THIS PIECE and I dont think I have ever seen it in the parts catolouges. I also havent seen it in the aim.

How does the rear plate mount to the car,do I need this peice, are they available reproduction?

Backplate

I had a 62 and can't remember if the back plate was there or not but if you look at his picture you will see the holes in the guard to mount the backplate. I would bet that is correct! Just my 2 cents worth!
Now with a 59 Silver!

It is a metal backing plate. Stuiog asked about the color of the steel plate and a discussion on semi gloss dipped parts followed. If you check out previous threads by studiog you will find more information.

Larry,
I do have that plate on my 61 and I debated whether to use it or not and I decided I would use it cause I am just about all stock anyway. That plate adds strength to the whole rear bumper support system by tying both sides together. If you get tapped in the "horseshoe" bumper area without it you may wind up with cracked fiberglass. I can take a photo of mine if it will help you. Cosmetically I think it looks better without it but that plate has the openings for the plastic inserts that the license plate screws screw into.
Gary

PS: When installed that plate is about 95% hidden by the lic. plate and the rear center bumper

The 3 parts of the back bumper bracket on each side mount to it. And all together
make the stability for the bumpers and license. The long bracket needs to be in
place before the body is droped back on the frame or you can't get it in place.
Took me a while to under stand it. Now if i only hade the front brackets.
If you need picks, let me know.

Look at corvette central part #201321. that should be it.

Here is a copy of the 1961 AIM on the rear bumper.

You know after looking at your photo,I now realize I did have that peice and think I gave it away to the fellow I sold my frame to thinking it was part of the battery tray.
I only knew what mine was cause it was stuck to the chrome "horseshoe".
You can see from the pic I posted of the 61 rear end that not much of this actually shows.
