C2- Speedometer problem

My speedometer needle is jumping all over the place. Odometer not registering. Would I be correct in suspecting it is the cable? If it is the cable is this something I can fix myself. I like to tinker but I am at a pretty basic level, with basic tools. Thanks

It may be as simple as cleaning and lubricating the cable. Remove it from the outer cover and check its condition.

The odometer problem is likely something more serious.

Thanks. Both problems occured at the same time. I looked at the cable just by the transmision and it is worn a bit (exposing the wire wesh). So I would just unscrew it from the transmision?

Sounds like the outer casing is breaking down. I suspect you will need both the outer casing and the cable.

Unthread it from the transmission and from the back of the speedometer, then remove for inspection.

More trouble ahead

As mentioned previously a cleaning and some grease will most probable clear up your needle problem, but the odometer is something else.

There is a small gear in the mechanisme connected to the odometer reset cable that is most certainly causing the problem. This gear actually helps turn the disks, and when it goes, nothing else does. Quite a while back these still could be found, but as far as I know, they are no longer available. The only way you will get it up and running is to send it to one of the gauge rebuilders, because it seems as though they still have a sh-t load of spare parts to service the clusters.

The cable and casing may be part of your problem, but the real problem is in the speedometer. Most likley the trip odo has failed and is causing the drive gear (2nd worm) to jump a tooth or two. Your unit is due for service. All gears are availabe from LICS, as well as correct odo units-but sometimes it's better to let a pro do it than to DIY-especially if it's a once every 10 year job.
