What in the hell does that have to do with a 1-1/2" engine offset? Please make the connection.

The engines are offset to the right as stated, but it's got nothing to do with the steering box. When designing the independent rear suspension, GM realized by having equal length half shafts, the diff input would be offset and not centred with respect to the frame. To keep the drive line straight and minimize deflection of the u-joints, the engine and transmission were offset accordingly.
Was that so hard?
 
Not to mention asymmetrical camber and toe reaction at the wheels.

Not to mention "torque steer" a common affect in front drives..
As you stated, at the rear, the wheels typically have separate toe links. Therefore, torque reaction of a driveshaft is fed into the chassis. The torque 'steer' of the rear wheels is dependent on toe stiffness and driveshaft angularity. If the factory gets that right; unequal lengths should not matter.

Although it's above a certain someone's comprehension; it is educational..
