Hello all, new to CAC. And the reason I'm new is I acquired a 1984 C4 as a project. And I have many questions as I get started. I know to do the research before asking questions so that there are no repeats, but stumbled across something that I couldn't find on the forum. I had to remove and replace the fuel tank as I have never seen so much rust. To do this , I removed the rear bumper for ease of replacing all fuel lines, fuel sending unit and hoses. Now that it's all back together, my question is, when I put the rear bumper back on, is there a sealant or gasket I need to use between bumper and body to keep water off the top of tank ? Or do I just start bolting it all back together without?

I've had the rear bumper cover off of my 89 and there was no sign of any tape/weather stripping or sealant
between the bumper cover and the rear body.

You can use a product like Zero Rust or Por15 to seal the exterior of the tank. Apply it in a open and well ventilated area because the fumes are toxic. The paint seals the metal preventing oxygen from getting to it. :chuckle
They do require a top coating to protect it from UV rays. Since your gas tank is not exposed to UV rays you don't need a top coating.

I wire wheeled the exterior of my F150's gas tank because of pin holes in the top of the tank. I soldered up
the holes. Applied Zero Rust to the tank and rear frame rails. A little touch up every couple of years and it has
held up fine for over 10 years. :L

There are also different brands of inside the gas tank sealants you can use on the fuel tank sender assembly. Just make sure none of it gets on the resistive material for the gas tank sender. It appears Por 15 has a sealant that can be used with different gasoline mixtures.

The exterior paints come in a couple of different colors.
