I have been to 2 GM dealers in search of touch up paint for my Dark Red 1995 convertable.

One dealer advised the paint is no longer available.:confused

The other dealer brought out something that was obviously ancient. It had the consistency of cold syrup (after I brushed off like 5 layers of dust) and was far beyond acceptable shelf life. :ugh

1. Is this touch up paint still available ?
2. If not does a reasonable alternative exist ?

I only have 2 spots about the size of a fingernail that needs repair.

:beer

You might try this

I went to the paint store that supplies the body shops in my town with the Manufactures paint he looked at my vin number went to the back of his shop mixed me a small bottle of perfectly matching paint.

Theres an Idea I haven't thought of.

I thought the paint on these cars required clear coat and a hardener though. I wonder if they would be able to mix up a metallic paint ?

no other suggestions for touch up paint ? Does the Duplicolor stuff at the parts store work ok ?

My girlfriends nail polish ? :upthumbs ( hey it looks right ! )

crayons ?

WOW thanks ! the last one is just too cool. Exactly what I needed. I guess I will put the nail polish back in my girlfriends purse. :cool

Thanks again !

I used http://www.paintscratch.com/ listed above. :thumb

They were able to provide the primer , basecoat and clear coat for my car as well as match the paint formulation variation by using the VIN.
Even provided an online paint sample for visual matching. :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

thanks everyone especially So Bay Vetter.

I received my package today from these guys. All I can say is wow !

It's right :thumb
It looks good.:thumb:thumb

I spent 30 bucks and got paint and sand paper that was perfect for what I needed. I painted 3 spots the size of a big fingernail.

Primer,Primer, Primer-> sand -> basecoat, sand -> clear coat

I sanded each repair spot between each coat with the 600 and 1000 grit paper.

It's not perfect but it is really, really close. Someone with a bit more skill and a few less beers, could make a top notch repair.

I'm not a car painter .. I just play one on TV. :boogie

On the serious side, can you REALLY use nail polish for a touch up???? I'm talking little tiny spots. I know it will stick, but what's the verdict?? thanks

I bought some Dupli-Color at Advance Auto to see how close it was to the dark red metallic on my '86 and it is a very good match.

I've done it.

No its not professional,
no its not the right stuff. However it does thin down with Acetone, so its not water based.

I'm not real sure I would do it on my 'vette though :W.

Maybe on the Mustang or the Taurus. Definately on the Corolla or the Civic ;)

Otherwise, I would spend 30 bucks and get the real stuff.

It's kinda like touching up the Mona Lisa with a crayon
