The PCM can be set to lock the torque converter during a shift. Two questions: Would this cause very firm and crisp shifts (sort of a neck jerk feel)? Would doing this cause undo wear or other problems. I hope I've used the correct terms here. Thanks.

Hi there,
Normally, your torque converter clutch or TCC will never engage during a shift. This is due to exactly what you have said, about undue wear and tear.
If it does, the might be something wrong, or a programming issue.
Yes, it would definately cause excessive wear.
This is why they had to change the program on c4, because of just this type of wear.
It should only engage after your shift is made.
