C5 Fuel Filter

I have a 2002 vette and as it is not my main car the mileage is quite low. I asked if any regular maintenance is needed after two years and only 3000 miles. The one dealer said, replace the fuel filter as if it sits a long time you can get a buildup of crud and you don't want this in your engine. Another dealer said that's crazy as fuel filters are based on mileage and it would probably rust before it needed replacing at 1500 miles a year. Anyone know the answer? Thanks.

I would recommend changing the fuel filter as well. If the car sits for long periods the gas will evaporate in the filter which will be the "crud" mentioned by the first mechanic. Fuel filters are cheap. Put it this way, it couldn't hurt.

Thanks for the quick reply. The dealer said they had to remove the exhaust to change the fuel filter. Total cost 100 dollars.ad Does that sound right? Thanks again.

If you have an automatic car, then yes, that is about right.
The six speed has much more room and you do not have to remove the drivers side muffler.

Yes, because the fuel filter not only filters particles from the fuel system. It also absorbs moisture in the fuel.

Personally, I recommend every 2 years or 15k miles, whichever comes first.
This is NOT a GM recommendation, only from personal service experience.

Okay, you guys have talked me into it. I have an MN6 and it's still off the ground, where is the fuel filter.

It is located on the drivers side, of the tunnel, to the left of the exhaust pipe.
It is a canister and has 3 lines going to it. It is retained by a 10mm nut.

I just picked up a 1998 with 13000 on it and I am sure nothing was done to the car. Is changing the fuel filter a job for a guy to do who is not very mechanical?

Would the car need to be on a lift or would Rhino Ramps work ?

Is this handled by a dealer? I dont want any gas leaking

Dave1998, if you are not very mechanical, you probably should have the dealer (or a good independent mechanic) do the filter replacement. (Especially if you do not want any gas spilled.) You will need to get the car up fairly high in the air to work under it. I doubt that Rhino ramps will provide the coverage (especially if you have an automatic and need to disconnect the exhaust) that is needed to do the fuel filter swap.
