C5 Reliability?

RELIABLE? YES.

Hi, just thought I would share some data with you. I was reading the latest consumer reports magazine on cars while at the grocery store.(while my wife was putzing around in the produce section for an hour) They rated the corvette as excellant reliability. Some of the various things they rated were brakes, transmission, engine ect. I have a 2003, I recently bought 4 months ago, and so far have had no problems. Of course when buying a car you get what you pay for. The higher price of a corvette generaly indicates that the parts used are of higher quality than a 15 to 20 thousand dollar car. The wheels and tires alone go for about 300 bucks a tire. Obviously a 300 dollar tire is better quality than say a 20 dollar pep boys tire. Same with most of the other parts in the car. And if you find that some parts are wearing out too soon there is the 6 year bumper to bumper warranty. Take care of the car well, and main tain it, and the car will take good care of you.
A few things that worry me is there is no dipstick to inspect the transmission fluid. You pretty much have to take it to a shop and pay some one to put it on a lift and check it. The problem with that is what if the guy does not actualy check it? The oil pan is flat, and wide so changing oil may be a hassle to drain out all of the old oil thoroughly. Another thing is th oil dipstick is a cork screw shaped dipstick, and is difficult to get accurate readings from.

JP,

I have 5,000 miles on my 4 month old 03 and it is now sitting in the shop (for almost a week :( ) with a badly leaking left rear axle seal. This appears to be a common problem on all year C5s from everything I have read. So much for a "continous improvement" type program as far as reliability. :eyerole

Other than that problem I have not found any other issues to date. If I had it to do again I would still buy a new C5... and I am sure glad I bought the extended warranty!!

Leaking Axle seal.

Man that makes me feel like kicking some engineer's rear-end!
How many years and how many designs does it take for the D--mn engineers to develop something correctly..it's not a space shuttle it a darn car!

I would love to take the one guy or team that decided on the design and GRAB them by the ear and pull them down to the garage and shove their head under the car and tell them to figure this out!!!

Maybe if they were to get their hands dirty and banged up with a few slips of the wrench and a few cuss words trying to replace it they would think harder the next time.

Many of these problems may stem from "subcontracting" certain parts out to other companies to manufacture. If so they are probably looking for the lowest bid...

Subcontracting usually means substandard!!!!!

Thanks for your input.

I'm a proud new owner of a 2004 Vette six speed coupe. In fact, I just got it today and put on 100 miles. Normally, I don't get extended warrantees for anthing that I buy, but with all the electronics on these C5's do you think it's wise to invest in one?
Also, is it a good idea (as recommended in the manual) to not drive faster than 50 MPH for the first 500 miles? It bugs me to be passed by so many old Fords, but I'll do it if it's worth it in the long long run. Thanks.

Put on an old blond wig, a big floppy hat, and large sunglasses. They will think you are an old lady. :)
Or after dark, fill it up with gas, get out on the interstate and head out in any direction. Put the cruse on 50 and watch the odometer go to 250, hook a U'ie and head back home.
Break in done! :) Good luck with it, and welcome to the club. It is a great car and you will love it.

I hear you John. Best to be safe than sorry. Have a good one.
