My 2000 still is not starting about 1 in 5 times.

I would recommend extracting codes from the BCM and the PCM.
If there are any security issues with the Passkey system, codes will be set for 50 ignition cycles"....

OK. Me being the complete rocket scientist that I am, am unsure of how to do this...

Is/Are there buttons, or a series of buttons, that allow me to do this without going to the dealership?

HI there,
Ok, so here is how it goes.
Get in the car, and start it up.
Please reset any messages on the DIC, to where you have a blank screen.
Then, push and hold the #4 button while pushing the #1 button 4 times.
Watch, and write down all codes seen. They come fast, so please be ready with a pen.
Then, you can post your findings, and let us know.
Besttoyou, and remember, you are looking for the PCM, and the BCM codes in this instance.

OK! Got em....

PCM - 2 codes • P1431 H & P1631 H

BCM - 1 code • B2721 H

You're ball c4c5Specialist... Do me proud!!

Will this help?

P1431 Fuel Level Sensor 2 Circuit Performance
P1631 Theft Deterrent Start Enable Signal Not Correct
B2721 Pass-Key detection circuit (out of range)

Aren't these neat, now what do you do with them? Without a scan tool and the 5 pounds of paper to read it's next to impossible to correct. Maybe C4C5 will take the time to type all of the required instructions, or take it to the dealer.

:confused

By the way I have a fairly complete code list in digital format (Word) if you want a copy, 42 pages, 277 kb.

Yes, Dad, I'd love it!

How do I get it from ya??:BOW

DIC list

My email address is correct in my profile, send me yours by private message or through the profile and I'll send it to you.

Hi there,
Ok, first thing is first, you will need to answer a few questions please, as I have forgotten some of the info that you have given earlier in this post.
Ok, well, your PCM codes, the 1431 is a known condition, and your dealership will be able to reference a TSB for this condition, as you must have had some fuel gauge problems in the past 50 ignition cycles.
The 1631 is a Passkey code, however, per GM diagnostics, we are to go to the BCM code FIRST, before proceeding with PCM diagnostics.
The BCM code is for an invalid signal. That states that the BCM is seeing a valid signal, however, it is not the correct one for your particular car.
Now, the questions, first, are you always using the same key?????
Was the ignition lock cylinder recently replaced????
Has the BCM been replaced????
Have you had all your keys tested for the correct value???
Please answer these questions, and I will check back in the morning.
We CAN fix the car, besttoyou, c4c5:hb

Howdy...

are you always using the same key????? my wifes or mine. same problem

Was the ignition lock cylinder recently replaced???? not to my knowledge.
Bought the car w/ 31k miles last July

Has the BCM been replaced???? not sure what the BCM is, but have only had the alternator replaced under warrantee several months ago (warrantee expired now)

Have you had all your keys tested for the correct value??? no. Do this at the dealer?

My gas gauge goes to zero if I fill up more than half way. Hense the gauge code I guess. My serpentine belt is chirping and I bought a replacement yesterday. My battery was nearly dead this morning, so I suspect it hasn't been turning the Alternator enough. What do you think?

Gas tank fill

Torchy2000

If I filled mine "to the brim" so to speak, it would foul up my gas gage. Now I let it click off and stop, no problem. Been that way for years without even a miss read, just by not over filling or it healed up, yeah right.

HIthere,
Ok, first things first, I would suggest the replacement of the ignition lock cylinder, as I feel that the contacts are not giving correct tension at the contacts to the key.
You specialist can confirm this operation, using the Vats Interrogator, and correct diagnosis.
This should be the first course of action in this case.
Please understand, that this is the first confirmation of a diagnosis, nothing more. Please give your specialist time to correctly diagnose the condition.
I would start there. Also, just so you know, your BCM is your body control module, and this controls VATS function.
Please keep us posted as to your resolution.
Besttoyou, c4c5:hb

Hey Dad...

I think your email link via profile is turned off.

I'm at: grobin4@cox.net

if that helps. I would very much like to obtain your list:beer

Oh, and c4c5, Thank you. I'll keep you posted.

...as for the gas tank, any amount past half way (+ an 1/8th or so) and it kicks my gauge off.
