Folks,

Any of you that have 97-04 C5's with the Borla Stinger exhaust system may find this of interest. Borla will soon release an X-pipe that will equalize exhaust pressure and significantly reduce that annoying "motor boat" burbling you get during deceleration.

Remo,

Are you saying you don't like that "motorboat" burbling??:eyerole Man, you're getting old before your time!!!;LOL

I have now gotten to the point where I actually like that deceleration burping my Borlas make. It's sort of like the respite where they get a quick breath before they start singing again. I get a few comments about it from time to time, too.

Do away with the decel burping? I dunno- I could be robbing my Z06 of her personality if I do that.
:D

Love the sound of my stingers on decel. The x-pipe will smooth out the noise, but you will lose back pressure and therefore low end torque. You will gain a few mph at the top end, but who cares. Small block chevy's like a little backpresssure. To me, X-pipe is a waste of money.

Elaine,

You know by now how much I like things to look and sound "smooth".

That's because you're so smooth yourself!!;) Seriously, when you get the x-pipe for the Stingers, let us know how it makes the exhaust sound. In all honestly, I think I'd prefer just a little less resonance...but, hey, it's Alan's car!!

Everybody seems to talk strictly about resonance and sound, but do these pipes add much horspower (is it noticable and worth it) or it just the sound everyone is looking for,. thanks

gcmlear,

Of course all the vendors for the various exhaust systems make huge claims around the horsepower increases relative to their products. I for one have always been sceptical of their claims. There probably are "some" minimal HP gains but for the most part it's all about the sound.

No question about it...for us, it's all about sound!:D

Burbling

I do love my burbling. I had an automatic coupe before I bought my roadster and my current Borlas were on it, but never heard any burbling on it. When I got the 6 speed, and swapped out the pipes, the sound appeared and I loved it from the start.

Borla's and X-Pipe...

Hello Everybody :w

Remo and a few other's here know me, but I will say that the Borla's are very good on the C-5's, even with the rest of the system stock, for sound, and a felt power increase. I have a MagnaFlow X-Pipe on my car with shorty header's, and you do not "Lose" back pressure, what you gain is increased airflow due to a balance of exhaust pulse. I have a buddy with an '01 ZO6, runinng a different brand of exhaust, and with Long tube headers, his car is very docile sounding until WOT is applied, at which point trap doors in the mufflers open, making it essentially a straight thru system, and then his car is just plain scary sounding !:cool As for the Burble, that is actually a sign of cold air being sucked back into your exhaust system due to a small leak, which is usually between the exhaust manifolds and muffers ! Not to worry, my car does it also, but I LIKE it. On cars with the cat back systems utilizing the band-clamp method of installation, this is where the most common leaks are found.

When the late, great John Lingenfelter says that you lose backpressure and therefore a small amount of low-end torque, I tend to believe him. Unless of coarse you have more experience tuning small block Chevy's and building the fastest Corvette's on the planet than Mr. Lingenfelter. Ever read one of his books? If not, were do you get your info? Please don't say the company's talking points that sold you the X-pipe.

I installed a Magnaflow X pipe on my 03 at the same time I installed my Stingers. I did the X-Pipe primarily to cut down on popping and burbling at deceleration. The X-Pipe HP gains are minimal. I have seen tests that netted approx 2 rwhp additional gain using the x-pipe with catback exhaust system vs aftermarket exhuast only. I will say that even with the X-Pipe, you still get some minimal popping and burbling; maybe not as obnoxious as with a stock H Pipe.

jcs,

Thanks for the input. I ordered a Corsa X-pipe last week (Borla said that theirs woul not be available for several months). Should have it installed late this week. Anything will be an improvement over the stock H-pipe.

Thanks.

Reply to Pac-Man...

Hello Pac-Man..:w
Where I get my "Info." from is from turning wrenches for the last 20 years. My experience is varied, I will just say it has ranged from passenger cars thru Class 8 trucks. Have I read any of Mr. Lingenfelter's books ? No. I understand the theories and principals, and his underlying concept of what it takes to build specefic performance parameters for any given situation, (Particular race series). This, because I TALK to people that knew,or worked under him. Which given the number of years he actively was in the motorsports business, is a great number !
I do read, and have read many excerpt's from Mr. Lingenfelter's publishing's, however, I would never place myself even as an equal to him. I am just a Good Ole Boy from the South, that doesn't like to drive anything with fewer than 8 cylinders, unless it makes at least 1800 ft/pds of torque ! To sum it up, EVEN my Lawn Mower has Dual Exhaust !

Steve.

I have Borla stingers on my 02 Vette. I had them on for a while before I decided to add a Corsa crossover. When I installed the crossover I noticed a loss in the cool sounds of the Borla and I did not notice any performance boost.

RB,

I added the Corsa X-Pipe in an effort to reduce the "cool" sounds coming from the Borla stingers. I particularly, I do not like that "motor boat" popping on decelaration. The X-pipe cut that "50's" hot rod sound in half and now the exhaust sounds much smoother when I lift. I know these things are a matter of personal taste, but I like a late model performance car to have a mildy agressive exhaust note without sounding like a 25 foot inboard Chris-Craft.

Remo:cool

Motorboat sound on decel? Listen to a set of Corsa's, as they sound just like a Chris Craft at idle.

IMO, the Borlas on decel sound EXACTLY like a V8 engine(at least on my Z06 LS6).

When I first went to Indy(back when cart was running REAL V8's, but that's another thread), the first sound I heard as I approached the tunnel under the front straight, was that fabulous popping and gurgling sound on decel as they approached turn 1.

That was about 10 years ago, and I swore that when I grew up and got my Vette, it would sound exactly like that......now it does:D
