I have a '91 last of the L98 engine vette with a 6 speed manual box. Yes it's got the CAGS system on it and it's a pain in the a**e. I know where the sensor is on the box, but will this set a check engine light if disconnected? I've seen for sale both a plug in unit to bypass the sysem and just the covers to blank it off. I would like to know before I spend money on the bypass wether I need it (imporing good to the UK is a real nightmare, the muppets over here open your stuff up and if they think its worth more than declared they sieze it, no arguments)

Also the clutch has a switch on it (that I disconnected and bypassed) that meant you had to have the pedal fully depressed before the starter would engage, did the designers not know this would cause premature failure in the thrust bearing in the clutch? I know most cars in the US are auto, but surely you boys wern't starting them in gear and running over granny were you?:L

The Cags kit is more for keeping the connector ends clean & out of the way. You can tape em' up & it shud be OK. I believe the "96" & later require a resistor or something?

That "Gizmo" is mainly a safety device.
You hit the starter in gear & away you go.
Years ago we used to be able to move cars just by putting in gear & cranking the starter, it was fun..until my father caught us!!:bash

You can unplug the cags connector and tape the ends to keep dirt from getting in them. No light will show up. However I think a better way is to have a custom prom chip burned with the cags programmed out of it and what ever else you need programmed in. Such as lower temperature fan engagement, fuel mixture, etc. Some off the shelf chips will do the same, but a custom burn can be more taylored to any other mods your doing. 84 CF 91 ZR-1

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies, I like the idea of having a chip done, but I don't know if it's possible in the UK. If it ain't Jap scrap or a Eurobox they don't do it over here. At least I can disconnect it now without fear of setting a fault code....many thanks.

CAGS light

Don't be surprised that the 1-4 light on dash still lights up after you disconnect CAGS under the car. It does on my 90 L-98. I think that CAGS stands for Car Actually Gets Shifted.
