1989 Callaway Twin Turbo Aerobody Coupe
Lets get a list of things that all Callaway owners should pay particular attention to ...Turbo coolent lines should be checked that is the last line you would want to loose on the road. Just think you could cook your Turbo's. The Turbo oil tank hoses are known to leak with age. The intercooler hoses are a point that can lead to boost issues . These are just a few items that should be checked frequently. Lets get everyone to post something here. All owner's are encouraged to list key points to keep these cars in top shape.......

I'll add, tubo oil pump / hose clearance for wiring and belts :eek Make sure it stays straight.

Also, I do not use ANY cleaners on my Dymag wheels, car wash soap & water only and use an old sock over my hand, no brushes.

I also found that the external thermostat caused the car to run 25-30 deg. warmer than with a conventional thermostat, Callaway no longer can get that part from their suppliers & reccomended removing it regardless - for cooler operation.

Great thread Pete, Keep it going :m

Chrinkle this

How do you clean/maintain/touch up the black crinkle finish :confused

Tony I use a little soap and water with a sponge and then dry it off with a towel . Do not wash when it is HOT! And if you have any scratches a black marker works fine to cover them up.

Radiator Hose

All owners should check the Upper radiator hose . It can sometimes come in contact with the belt when accelarating hard and the belt can cut into the upper hose causing a leak .

Fan switch

If you change the Auxilary fan switch to a lower temp it will help cool the car better. Also you can send you computer prom to Callaway and have them turn the fans on sooner , put in a 180 degree thermostat with a bleed hole and the stock corvette hose setup works much better that the EXTERNAL thermostat setup .It Will definately keep you car cooler. I have noticed that a stock bodied car also runs COOLER than one with an AEROBODY.

Pete - That is very true, I have a 1/8" hole in my thermostat - Aero cars run about 5 degrees hotter.
Also found out that our cars NEED the air dam in place, some Aerocars have this missing :eek
I picked one up at my local Chevy dealer - even said in the parts computer "For SEO Z5G cars" :upthumbs

callaway replaced my thermostat

when they fixed oil leaks last week they said they replaced thermostat (a standard procedure now) what do they use. my tt always runs on the hot side. in the summer on a 85+ degree humid day stopped in traffic temp would go 2/3 thirds of the way up gage. however, driving home from callaway on I 95 at 80 mph plus in sixth gear on a 55 degree day temp was lowest i have ever seen (1/3 third up gage). even sitting in traffic it was lower( a sliver above half way) what are others reading?

I agree. Though if the coolant line goes, your turbo might not cook right away, but your shortblock will be done in a very short amount time.

Checking your vaccum hoses is also very important for proper wastegate operation and microfueler workings.

Let's not forget that these torque monsters are hard on driveline components. Change your transmission fluid and rear diff fluids at regular intervals and use a high quality fluid. I say only use factory fill on a ZF6 but some people would disagree. Also, check U-joints on drive shaft and half shafts frequently.

Always make sure you have ample gasoline in the tank - NEVER drive with the guage near the "reserve level" as the fuel pump pickup will "uncover" and it will not get gas :eek

Kevin, Callaway Agrees with you about the factory GM fill on the ZF :beer

Tony, any word on the code of paint for this??? :cool
:m
Not yet. Will call tomorrow & push.;) I corrected the sender problem & all is well.Just have to bleed the brakes(installed the J55's) & then:SteerHave only one potential problem that I will fix when the snow comes.I think I have a bad rear seal since the bottom of my inspection cover (between the cover & the bellhousing )has a trace of oil(had it when I bought the car)Hard to tell where it is coming from(back of intake, oil pan, etc.)I did the intake & oil pan when I rebuilt everything so that leaves the seal unless I screwed up.I'll know more the more I drive the car.Any suggestions out there to find out where it is coming from??
