I had an earlier post on some new gear I purchased that has not been installed on my 88 L-98.

Right now I have a 52 mm. Throttle Body, "Vortex" behind the throttle body, K&N, Open Filter Housing, adj. fuel pressure, Y-Pipe (no precats) free flow cat and Flomasters. (I didn't know there were different types, but these are great.

Anyway, I bought a an Accell Super Ram, Crane Gold Roller Rockers (1.6) Accell Plenum and long tube runners plus 24lb. injectors.

My 88 blew a head gasket so I decided to take care of the upper engine while it was broken down. I now find that I need to modify the heads and valves and add a new cam.

Can some of you experts give me the best advice on Brand name cams? I've seen "Crane Flat Tappet cam w/.470 lift, 226 duration" but have no idea what that means, other than it holds the valves open longer I assume. Since my heads are out, can I have them ported. I saw someone mention AFR 190's and ported 113 heads?

I need some help right away. My mechanic says he needs to get the car back together by Wednesday of next week. (4/23)

Will this give me the "balance" between intake and proper compression ratios, etc.

Thanks very much.

Mike

Since you already have the Superram, you should use the Accel 74219 cam, it was made for the SR. That is, if you have the SR plenum and runners. The base manifold and a ported plenum/runners would work better with a 74211 or ZZ9 from Tpis.

There is also a slightly larger cam by Comp Cams, something like 224/230 (i dont remember for sure) that will work, the HP peak will be raised to a different rpm and the idle may not be as smooth as the 219 but it does work great with tuning and makes good power (better peak number, i imagine)

The 88 heads are the 113s, and Lingenfelter uses them with his SR combos, so id have them ported and call Lingenfelter or Comp Cams to see what springs and such they recommend for their cams. Lingenfelter will tell you everything you need to know.

Id definitely have some Titanium retainers put in and a 3angle valve job.

As for the AFRs, they have the upwards potential that would work better with the bigger cam and can far outflow the 113s. But you dont need them if this is as far as youre going. If you were going with a bigger cam than the 219, and later going to a 383-396 etc, then id get the AFR 190s. (airflowresearch.com)

Thanks Vader. I should have read your other post first.

This is the kind of specific information I need. Here is what I have already purchased. (I'm sure I could exchange the items)

1. Accell SuperRam Intake
2. Accell "Long-tube or Large-Tube" Runners
3. A ported plenum. I don't know if this is Accell or not. The place I am getting the parts is a Corvette parts/repair in Tempe, AZ known as Exotic Muscle. (www.exoticmuscle.com)

4. 24 lbs. injectors
5. Crane Gold "Race" roller rockers.

Exotic is going to port the plenum and match the runners. I'm not sure what the "match" is but I think it is matching the ports of the runners to the plenum.

At this point, it seems that the TPIS ZZ9 cam would work best. I"ve seen it in a hundred posts on cams. Tomorrow my local mechanic is going to call the place where my original heads are and see if they can either swap me for some ported heads or port mine. I'm going to call Lingenfelter and see what springs they recommend. WHEN IT COMES TO PORTING AND ENLARGING THE VALVE SEATS IS THERE A STANDARD OR IS THIS SOMETHING YOU SPECIFY?

Are the Titanium retains a big expense? I can probably get them at Exotic Muscle.

I'll check airflowresearch.com and see what they offer.

The MSD 6AL seems like a good addition with more of everything. Since my RPM's should be increasing I don't want a weak spark at the higher RPM's.

Thanks Vadar!

Mike
