hi there guys,

just wandering is there any performance gain at all bye removing "egr valve" annnnnd pipes completely from engine?

what is the role of the "egr" valve any way?

should i do this at all?

any ideas if i should do this on what or how to go about doing it?

I have the block off plate on mine, not sure if there are any imporvement in performance or not.

"EGR" Exhaust Gas Recirculation . . . part of smog equipment. American cars have had them for years, and they have always caused problems, mainly in the form of vacuum leaks.

I have seen no performance gains by removing them, unless your engine is absolutely fine-tuned and yer running at 9000 RPM at Bonneville . . .

Conversely, I have seen no performance losses due to removal of those pesky gadgets. I am not sure of your local Environmental Protection Agency rules, but here their EPA Nazis take a dim view of messing with any polution controls.

Check the forum regarding polution controls in the C-4 area.

most EGR equipped cars have fuel/spark maps in ecm screwed up to correlate with EGR in cruise modes...disconnecting the egr often will cause the engine to run noticeably warmer

egr is (should be) off at idle,tps switch signalling closed throttle, and at WOT (above 3/4 tps position)...hard to detect normal ops

some gm ecm's (i don't think yours) self initiate a test of egr function during road cruise conditions and lite MIL if no egr response occurs

it could cause "pinging" because the exhaust gas lowers the combustion temps and higher temp could cause "pinging"

the newer cars are designed to have ege introduced to the combustion chamber . If it is defeated you will have spark knock and the knock sensor will retard the timing with a resulting poorer engine performance and gas milage. the only way to defeat it is to have a new prom made with that figured in, IMHO leave it functional hate to sound like a tree hugger because I am not but it is better for the the air and your car over all Steve

Like the others have said, if you take the EGR off, the CEL will be on if you don't tell the brains that it's not there anymore because the brains assume that it's still there.

Pretty much everyone says that the EGR basically does nothing for emissions.

If you get a PROM burned to turn the SES light off, go ahead and take the EGR off. If you don't get a PROM burned to turn off the SES light, leave the EGR on. It neither hurts or helps but it is a nuisance when something goes wrong with it. In fact, many places sell L98 intake manifolds with the EGR blocked off. I guess it's less problems to go wrong with the car!

the emissions that is deminished by the egr valve are nitrous oxides that contribute to smog . If you need to pass a sniff test it my not pass unless your cats are in real good shape IMHO I would leave the system intact unless you are going to highly modify the corvette. I feel you would benifit in the long run with lower combustion temps and the possability to bump up the timing for better performance with premium fuel Steve
