Trying to get my things to do list together (for the shop) i poked around under the car yesterday and found my source of stinky smelliness. :eyerole

Basically, 2 weeks ago i had the oil changed and i found the rear diff is leaking, as is the square plate (transmission, before the cat, methinks) that was supposed to get fixed 2 years ago. Rats.. :mad

But, moving on, i picked a known Vette Shop (1 hour drive away), but they are busy for the next 2 weeks as everyone is trying to get their car on the road. Of course.. :eyerole

Figured i can poke around and see if i cant get the motor to stop sounding bad (when cold, she seems to leak exhaust somewhere). Tightened up a few screws holding the head covers on (gaskets were replaced by the same 'shop' and the screws not tightened. :mad). It does sound a bit better today.

BUT: It appears that a cable got itself attached to the exhaust pipe, from looking around, i believe it's the TV cable. I used a few cable ties to bind it away from the pipe for now but the outer cover is melted and the inner metal cage is visible.

Questions:
A) Am i correct in this being the TV Cable? It goes from the tranny under the driver floor pan up into the engine compartment (couldnt find where to)?
B) Is it supposed to be so long and slop around?
C) What the heck does a Throttle Valve (Is that even right?) cable do? I've only found the part under the car, no the above end of it, so me puzzled. ;shrug
D) Do i need to replace (have it replaced) now thats a bit bare?

Questions questions questions. I'm full of them today. :chuckle

A. Yes
B. It is long but it shouldn't "slop" around.
C. It tells the transmission to "forced downshift" or "kick down" into the next lower gear when you floor the gas.
D If the cable was damaged by the exhust heat, you should replace the cable per the service manual then readjust it.

It's been a while since I've had my Collectors Edition ands thus worked on an 82. That cable has an effect on the transmission shifting point. It is an adjustment to the downshift, if I remember correctly. It runs fron the throttle linkage under the hood to the transmission. I can't remember how long it should be but it should not be hitting the exhaust. Tie it away fron the exhaust and verify the cable still moves freely. Press the gas pedal and that cable should move something on the transmission at wide open throttle. I would say a little bare is ok, again it is a mechanical link from the throttle linkage and the transmission.

I hope I have helped you, it's been a while since I worked on mine.
Good luck!!

TV cable is on the right side of the trans. Speedo cable is on the left. I think you are looking at the speedo.Mike

The TV cable ends up bolted in the trans case right next to the dipstick tube. 10mm head and it seems like it's 3' long when you take it out. Other end is in a bracket, usually with the throttle cable and has a pair of tabs you squeeze to get it out. If it's damaged, replacing it is a very good idea. It controls the pressures in the trans and if it's sticking or won't travel correctly you risk cooking the trans.

Mike! Long time no hear!!!! (Sorry for the hijack, Estefan...:ugh:ugh )

No sweat Panama Man. :chuckle

Ok, i think i need to crawl and snap a pic or two.. We are talking about the left side of the trans. But a picture says 1000 and so on.. ;)

Speaking of, anyone got a good pic of the underside of an 82? Just so i get my bearings while lurching under the car? Remember, PC Geek here. And blond on top of that.. :ohnoes :L

I shall be back to this on the weekend (gotta fly to London for 2 days. )

Thanks for the replies thus far, at least i am NOT going crazy (well, all the way). :chuckle

Ok, car is at the Shop. We shall see what he finds. :ugh We still have to see if i trust him or not, me and the wifey kinda got a weird vibe, she is hoping he doesnt see me/us as a cash cow..

Funny that, he just called.. Ugh a few things:
- Cat needs replacing (kinda figured that one, hasnt been replaced in 16 years)
- The diff leaking: The outer seals are shot (:mad), so that has to come apart and get replaced, yey.. Half shafts, spare tire and carrier.. The lot. :cry
- The "Wandler" (converter?) from the motor to the tranny, the thing with the square plate leaking: He cant see where it's leaking from, but it has engine oil coming through there. He will investigate (Uh boy.. ) starting at the engine covers, making sure they seal, clean them up and see if anything transpires from there.
- Tires: Need new ones (Knew that), he will see if he can find BF Goodrich TA's..

Okay, i think thats about it.. He is looking at around 1000 Euros, maybe a little more, depending how he get's stuff apart. Which would be low.. We shall see what this ends up being.

Oh, and here are the pics of the cable:

He knows he should look at the cable and see what can be done about it.. Fun stuff..

PS: He already soldered the Radiator overflow on the rad. I had only "glued" it on with liquid metal. :thumb

Thats the Speedometer cable!!:thumb

Thats the Speedometer cable!!:thumb
Thanks Junk.. I gotta talk to the mechanic and see what he wants to do, maybe just wrap it in electrical tape. We'll see. Thanks for the confirmation. Btw the Speedo still works.. ;)

Oh, one thing i forgot: The left ball bearing needs to be fixed as well, he will address that when he takes the diff out.. Sounds like i am getting a new car.. ;):W

Estefan,

If the "Wandler" is the torque converter, then perhaps the engine oil getting to it is the Rear Main Oil Seal. Just in case tells you that the tranny has to come off, DON'T BELIEVE HIM!!!!

Basically one has to disconnect the idler arm for the steering linkage between the front wheels to allow the slipping of the engine oil pan past the oil pump pick up.

Ditto on what GMJunkie is saying. That does look like the speedo cable.

About the catalitic converter....see if Germany allows you to place one of those high flow cats from Eckler's or Corvette Central. They work like a charm. If not,
I wonder if the 81's and 82's were the same, for I have a low milage cat that looks in excellent conditions and I would send it to you just for the cost in shipment from New Mexico to Germany. :)

Thanks Gerry. Good Info :thumb
I was talking to my boss (who used to be a tank mechanic and had a 82 CE a long time ago :chuckle) and he suggested the Rear Main Oil Seal too. Now i can tell the mechanic if he pipes up re removing the Tranny.. :)

With the Cat: I dont think Germany cares, as long as it's there. Not only would they have to remove the shield to check, but i dont think the 'guys' at the Fed Station that does the check would know one from the other. And btw, the mechanic already said, he would only replace it with a high flow, as the others are hard to get, which is fine with me. But i really appreciate the offer. :cool

But, today more news (and more money spent, yey :eyerole:L):
He took the half shafts out and found the yokes (?) to be run in as well as the main pin holding them in. Causing the bearings to go. The left rear wheel had side to side play in it. Yikes ! :ugh I told him to replace them (another 500 Euros in parts). I'd rather not risk that coming apart on me.:ohnoes

I might not name the thing the right things, trying to translate between half german with english words and the proper term here is harder then i thought.. :L

We shall see where this round of of fixing "The Underside" leads. As i said, i might have a new car by the end of it. But, i have to say, we're still in the ballpark, though it hurts to have to spend it twice within 2 years, because the nummies before didnt do their job. :eyerole

I'll keep you posted.

Right.. Just to finish this round up..

I picked the car up on Thursday last week (been a bit busy with family visits and other fun stuff)..

Here is the scoop of what the mechanic did:
replaced the left wheel bearing
replaced the left axle spindle
replaced the cat
replaced 4 tires (Now running Goodyear GT+4's)
replaced 2 side yokes
1 differential main bolt
2 side seals
1 seal gasket for the cover of the diff
2 rings of the yokes
2 engine cover gaskets
the brake fluid (yes, all of it)

Basically, the nummies before did a $hit job (scuse my 'german'). They used gasket glue of some sort of and messed up their job(s) and my car :mad

What this guy found is raising my hair even afterwards. He replaced the gaskets on the covers, used the proper things to seal them up (as the prev. goop got squeezed from the screws). But by taking apart the rear diff, he found all sorts of stuff wrong. Main bolt being one of them.. Here is a pic of the spindles and the bolt in a box (if you look closely, you can make out the grooves that arent supposed to be there and they are quite deep. All the hardened metal was GONE).. :ohnoes

The side yokes looked like they were bumping around in there, makeing the top of them having grooves on the top.

He also replaced the cat, as that was broken (kinda expected that one). And the tires were a given. My BFG's were ancient.

The car drives much better, sounds a bit meaner (though there is a slight low rumble i dont like, like the exhaust hitting the underside) and much more responsive. And at this point, the rear is dry as a bone, but the torque converter is still a bit leaky. We'll probably attack that one next round in 2-3 weeks. He did mention main engine oil seal and he did say that that doesnt need the tranny coming out. :beer

He wanted me to go out and drive her a bit (500mls) so we can tighten up the cover screws and then check on leaks anywhere). Oh, and the gasket for the oilpan was glued too; still is as it's only sweating a bit through, but nothing major; we might do this with the main engine oil seal together as the pan has to come off for that one.

The radiator overflow got sodered on (Remember my search for liquid steel?): Solved. :D

Now to the bad news:
He thinks the cam is worn, but i told him to not rip it apart. We'll see if we do this. The engine is 26 years old now. It can make a little lifter noise. :cry

The brake fluid: Basically, I had mud in the main brake cylinder, as per him. He replaced it completly and let the air out of the brakes. He was furious for the nummies to let me back on the road like that. And before anyone yells at me, one couldnt see that (or feel that) as the fluid that was still there covered it.

Oh and yes the "TV" cable, thats a speedo cable: He found that the holder was on there incorrectly (upside down), so he changed that, put the speedo cable in there and wrapped it in electrcians tape. Cant see it anymore when looking under the car. :thumb

Pheww.. Sorry for the long winded one, but hey, it's me.. :gap

Thanks for the advise as always, you guys are the Best ! :thumb :thumb

Hello Stefan,

Looks like your vette needed a good second opinion ;)
Your yokes aren't that bad (compared to mine) but when the hardened service is gone, changing is the only solution.

Well I would say, good luck and make sure you use the parts (DRIVE IT!) :D
