Can you identify this under-dash component?

While working on my electrical woes I came across this component under the dash. It was screwed to the steering column brace if I recall. This may be something a previous owner put in, I'm not sure (a kill switch was attached to the same screw holding this). In any case, it was not connected to anything so I pulled it out for now. It looks like it could be an old resistor or something. Cardboard case, black wires out of either side. I can see part of the words on it, I didn't want to pull apart the bracket to get to the rest.
Line 1: MGTS.... 2P47-1
Line 2: .47.... MFD
Line 3: 200....V.D.C
Line 4.... =/- 10%

That is a capacitor. It may have been installed to suppress radio ignition noise.

Thanks Lew!

So it doesn't sound original and it was not connected up anyway, so I think it will stay out :-) I don't need anything extra under there with the stuff I have going on.

If you notice any ignition or generator noise when you listen to your radio, you might want to purchase a new noise surpressor from Radio Shack. They are cheap.

That's a capacitor OK, I'm sure it was originally used on the stop lamp switch. One end of tainlyeach goes into each side of the stop lamp connecxtor to suppress any "click" or similar sound when the brake is applied.

(Correction in spelling, sorry!)

If you take that out of the car, DON"T THROW IT AWAY. As a matter of fact, mail it to me, I wouldn't mind having an extra one.
If you bother to listen to the original radio(if it works), and it "pops" when you hit the brakes, then hook that cap to each end of the brake light switch.

A paper electrolytic capacitor is probably not working after 40 years.
(they dry up, they have a small amount of liquid soaked in them)

But keep the thing anyway.

Yup, that's the original radio suppression capacitor for the stop light switch; if you don't want it, let me know :D
