cant lign up harmonic balancer

Hi,

No matter how far i turn my distrubutor counter clock wise i cant get my harmonic balancer to lign up with the timing scale.

Ive turned it as far as i can and it just reaches the bottom of the timing scale.

What could be wrong here, is it the harmonic balancer or did something slip or break inside of the engine. It seems to run fine.

Could be the counter weights are hung up or a spring broke off,did you pull off the vacume line when ya tried to time it?Possible the balancer rubber let loose and the outer ring slipped.Did you pull the distributor out?or pull the damper off recently?

Quite possible the harmonic balancer's rubber has given up & outer inertia ring has slipped ... this is rather common symptom & cause. They're really not repairable/rebuildable without specialized heavy equipment ... a new OE type can be had for $30 - $50.

Trot right on down to the chevy dealer. Also most advance, autozone etc. for a bit less than dealer. Just ask for a replacement ... best to have your old one with you as there's more than one.

Balance is not a problem ... the new one has the weight in same place as the old one ... it's standardized. When a motor gets balanced, standard procedure to add/subtract weight is on crank itself. I guess that's why they're more properly called dampers because they really don't balance anything.
