Car quits at 2,700 rpm

It all started with an intermittent problem of the car running real bad. The mechanics at Bill’s Garage here in Lafayette, Louisiana said that there was a problem between the throttle body and the throttle position sensor. They suggested a new throttle body so I bought one, an Edelbrock/BBK 52mm.

Apparently they didn’t read the instructions that came with the TB because they tore up the old power coupler due to the new TB being slightly larger that the stock one and I had to purchase a new power coupler. Bill’s Garage charged $275 to install the new TB.

Now the Corvette runs great until the RPM’s reach 2,700 and then the engine just “shuts down”, no acceleration, and no power.

Any suggestions as to what’s going on inside that engine compartment. By the way the engine was just rebuilt along with the automatic transmission.
 
2700 stall

Does your model year have a rev limiter? Sounds like it's cutting in too soon.
 
Hey guy...have you changed the fuel filter? If you haven't then go to your nearest auto parts store and purchase one...they're under ten bucks and not hard to change.
 
When the engine was rebuilt a new fuel filter, plugs, rotor, and plug wires were installed along with all new sensors.
 
I am pretty sure the 86 doesn't have a rev limiter, or at least it hasn't kicked in with me driving :)

Okay so let me get this straight, the car actually shuts off when you get to 2700 RPM's on the button.

I had the same thing happening on my '90 about two months ago. Turned out to be a bad fuel injector. Try unplugging the electrical connector one injector at a time and see if it revs up OK. I ended up driving it that way for a day until I replaced all injectors. Turns out two injectors, including the one that was causing the biggest problem, had low resistance readings, ~5 ohms.
 
I think I'd stay way from Bill's garage, too.
 
At 2,700 almost on the nose..., it's like you shut of the gas or spark. Resumes running once you drop below 2,700 and get off the pedal.
 
I would check out the CAT, after searching the forum for the vacuum gauge procedure. My car lost all power when the CAT clogged, as Ken said.

If that checks out, I'd visit the engine builder and ask them. If it was the same garage, forget it; find another.

Is this a different engine, heads and all, or the stock motor?
 
If the cat was clogged wouldn't there be driveability issues below 2700 RPM's? This is kind of weird that it cuts out. The only thing I can think of is maybe the distributor module.

Hi,

do you get any error codes? Does your car have a MAF? Comparing to Volvos of which I have most experience, a faulty MAF can set the car in limp home mode with out a code and max rpm of 3000. Fabulous tech...

I missed the intermittant comment. That would make me suspect an electrical issue, perhaps with a connection. The '86 has a MAF (mass airflow sensor) which tells the ECM how much air is going into the engine, therefore how much fuel to add for the driving demands. If that measurement is off, for whatever reason, or the signal is missing or of wrong voltage, the ECM is guessing; perhaps 'limping'.

More information is needed. While the CAT can clean it up some, is the engine running rich or lean when this issue crops up? Is the Check Engine light on?
 
I wanted to end this thread and thank all those who responded with their ideas. The car sat at Bill’s Garage for two weeks without any indication that there was work being performed. I sent Bill Hartwell (the Bill of Bill’s Garage) a letter after I called the garage and was told by Bill’s assistant that they were working on the car. Odd the vehicle never moved from its spot on the other side of the garage.
It was apparent they were quite upset about being caught in a lie but it worked out great. I got by Corvette back that very afternoon they received the letter and it runs great. They never said what they had to do to get it to run properly but I’ll bet they never read the instructions that came with the B&K Throttle Body.
Now I need to find a new mechanic.
