I finished rebuilding the Q-jet and one more problem left it seems. The idle is a little high but the idle adjustment is all the way loosened. The main problem is that there is a lot of whitish/blue smoke is coming from the exhaust but it was a cold day. Smoke doesnt comeout the back ever. It was difficult to tell what color it was exactly. The car was idling real choppy as well. and when I stepped on the accelerator to see if it would smooth out the engine didnt rev. I stepped on it to where the rpms would be at about 3000 but it just shook the car more.

I was told by one mechanic who adjusted my choke was that I need a new spring in the choke? My friend who rebuilt it said that he doesnt remember a spring being in there. He told me to tighten the front screws for the jets all the way to the right, divide that by two, and then tighten by that, to cut the gas thats getting in there by half becuase its drowning. Does this sound about rght? But he said that the choke wasnt the problem.

Can you please tell me any symptoms to look for that might help diagnose this problem or things to cure it. If you need more info on anything I got it.

Help me wave again :cry ,

Can't comment on your choke issue, but you can't set the idle mixture screws by "count"; you connect a vacuum gauge to a full manifold vacuum source (either at the base of the carb or at the fitting on the intake behind the carb), and adjust the two idle mixture screws until you get the highest steady vacuum reading. Start at 1-1/2 turns out from lightly seated and work from there; do NOT tighten those two screws or you'll destroy the machined taper on their ends and won't be able to adjust them properly.

The idle mixture screws are on the drivers side or at the front, closer to the hood. Do you happen to have a diagram? Man, I was hoping it was going to be easier!

Actually theyre not exactly screws (the ones in the very front) , theyre pegs that you can loosen and tighten. Theryre a mother to get to w/ the carb on becuase of all the hoses in the front.

So start small w/ the turns, John? Thanks, Im going to grab a gauge tommorrow.

OK heres an update as if anyone cares. Since everyone has problems w/ their carbs and needs to listen to someone elses.

i finally got it overhauled by a champ. There were about 3 very important things missing from in there and 2 things just wrong. The needle and seat werent tight. The plastic cover for the float pivot area wasnt there. The spring for the accelerator pump? wasnt there. The wrong gasket was on there. And the throttle position sensor was about as off as it can be.

One thing is left to do. The check engine light comes on after Ive been driving for about 5-7 minutes. When this happens the idle drops about 200rpm as well. The car drives fine though but it kinda sticks at the very very begininng of acceleration.

Now its like Im driving a car w/ a different engine. The pedal is very responsive and now I can haul some ass as to where before it just kinda got going fast.

I need to hook the up the diagnostic thing to the computer to see what code the engine gives. I looked forever for the adapter that plugs into the computer. I looked everywhere under the dash of the driver side and the passenger side. Can someone give me a hint as to where it is please.
