when pressing on the gas, the carb backfires as well as a backfire from the exhaust. only thing changed on the car was cap and rotor and spark plugs.

PLEASE HELP!!!:)

backfire

hey guy, make sure your plug wires are going to the correct cylinders. it is easy to switch #5 and #7. peace Bud

thanks for the input i'll try it and let ya know...

Allright I know this may bee far fetched, but i had a simular problem with my 66 and thought for sure it was something in the ignition system.Only to see when I reinstalled my air cleaner i had the PVC vacum home on my axcellerator pump givving me a real bad stumble and backfire from the carb.

I only point this out as it may be something simple.

PS i used to get so angry at my cars when they had a problem after i worked on them.

I mean I used to actually think
" I go thru all of the trouble to change your oil and give you new plugs and this is how you treat me"

I actually thought the car was trying to spite me. Well some how I realized that the car was not out to spite me it was only because i did something wrong.

Good Luck Also look under the hood tonight in the dark to se if any of the plugs are sparking to each other.I think 5 & 8 are close in the firing order and are supposed to be seperated in the looms

I had a similar rough running, missing, etc problem out of blue, a few days after doing routine tune-up service. Close inspection revealed that a mouse (found droping on intake manifold) had chewed through couple spark plug wires near distributor behind carb, as well as the electrical lead on the ignition noise subpression capacitor aslo next to the distributor. Replaced damaged S. P. wires and repaired wire on capacitor which only had a few strands of copper s wire intact. Engine idle and performance returned to normal. I am believer of an old Navy procedure; i.e. do not assuming anything until you look, touch and shake everything related.
