I have a 81 vette with a new ZZ4, high performance 700R4 trans by TCI and a 4:11 rear. I am using stock Q-jet with stock distributor. I heard that changing the carb and distributor can make a big difference in proformance, by I don't want to mess up my computer. If anyone knows of a good carb (CFM?) to use with this setup your feedback would be greatly appreciated (I still have the new ZZ4 distibutor, not installed). Thanks,

Joe,

I would consider unplugging the computer, and neatly rolling the harness from the carb, intake and distributor up and tucking it out of site.

I would then go with a good air gap performer manifold and demon carb, or Holley Street Avenger. Toss that distributor and install an older HEI with standard vacuum advance.

You might need to change your hood though. Play with some extreme drop down bases on the air cleaner and an filter lid filter set up from K&N.

With you gear and engine combo...that thing would explode to life!

Joe,

Disclaimer first: I don't know the difference between the Qjet on the '81 and the '80 and earlier, if there is any difference. I'm going to write as if there is no difference.

The base Q-jet 750 should supply you plenty of go-go juice for your car. I have the ZZ4 with no other [engine] mods 'cept for the exhaust and ignition system. The 750cfm Q-jet is a very capable carb in the hands of good mechanic. Have it cleaned and rejetted and I would believe there's no need to switch carbs. The car will also fit a 3" tall K&N with the stock hood and the ZZ4 engine. I know...I was running that exact same setup.

I'm not typically one to ever disagree with 69MyWay, so I'm speaking strictly from experience here. And ask Chris as he's seen me drive. I not often driving Miss Daisy. I'm usually throttle down the entire time. Trust me, my car with the Q-Jet has never bogged, quit, flooded, or anything! It's been flawless!

...on a side note, I'd love to know your best 1/4 mile time with that setup. I pulled a 13.44 @106mph with my beatup TH350 and 3.08 rear. The 700R4 comes next spring. I figure you'll be high 12's with your new trans and gearing.
