I have a 1970 LT-1 with the stock Holley carburetor. The carb has a couple of problems:

1. It leaks fuel where the butterfly rod passes thru the carb housing.

2. The engine stumbles just off idle when accelerating.

3. The idle speed can vary about 300 rpm.

Can anyone recommend a good place to have the carburetor worked on - preferably one that has the ability to flow check it? Thanks for any help.

The holes which the shafts run through are likely worn out. But bushings can be installed by a competent carb rebuilder. Seeing as how you live in Rochester, which is GM's former carb capital, you should be able to find someone who knows there stuff. Break out the yellow pages!

Is this an original numbers-matching carb or a replacement. If it isn't original, I'd be tempted to stick a new one on there...

holley is a very common carb that has been used a long time. you should have no problem finding someone to fix this one. holley will do it, so will barry grant. i agree with page, if its not the ori, a new replacement would be the best bet. just my opi hope it helps. robert we have several forum members that are very good at this and i am sure would be glad to help. Mike (stingray6974) is an outstanding wrench. send him an im and see what he would charge. he does quality work and is a really nice guy.

Unless your trying to keep your car 'all original'.... i wouldnt even consider getting it rebuilt/repaired . Holley replacement carbs are numerous and must surely have improved over 30 some years. Youre only talking about $250-400 for a completely new carb . (come to think of it, i wonder how many 'truly all original' C3 vettes there are -- not many ill bet).

DaveC- Welcome to the CAC! :beer

I sent my '71 LT-1's carb to the Holly Custom Shop to be "restored". They rebuilt and re-colored it, (and replaced the base plate which they found had a hairline crack) and it looked and ran like new! I thought the price was reasonable, too.
Maybe you don't need or want the full job done on it, but have whoever rebuilds it install the power valve blowout protection, too.

Dave C WELCOME

1) Are you mechanically inclined?

2) Are you on a budget?

3) Do you have a Carb repair shop by your house?

Answer these questions and we may proceed.

Thank you for your responses and your welcomes. The carburetor is the original one which is why I don't want to put a new one on. In fact, the whole car is pretty much original. I do have the ability to do the rebuild myself but I think it needs the help of an expert. I had it rebuilt once locally due to a bad tank of Sunoco gas and told the shop about the problems. When I put the carb back on, the engine ran fine except the problems were still there.

Midshark - could you give me the phone number or web site to the Holley shop you used?

Thanks again!

This was from three years ago, but I have a number for the Holley Custom Shop- 1-888-HOLLEY5 (465-5395). Hope it still works!
