OK, putting new carpet in my 1979. Here's a few ? we need answered. Would appreciate as always.

Andy

1. their are door jamb lip pieces as soon as u open your door running vertical on the outside of jamb. Where can i purchase them? Really , i think they are covers of some sort.
2. ??? on measuring and trimming two main floor pan pieces - is it
best to align and adjust for trimming from the door sills than work
in towards the tranny tunnel on both sides or work from tranny tunnel
out towards door sills? My impression to to work from door sills
inward but it would be nice to confirm that.
3. on the rear hatch area piece, what is the best way to measure and
cut for the compartment door frame piece.
4. we haven't gotten to the door capetpieces yet, but what is the best way
to cut out the existing door carpet inserts and than what's the best
way to attach the new pieces onto the door panel?

Thanks..

Andy

Did my 81 in Oct / Nov 05 with full set of carpet from Mid-America. I did the rear deck first, passenger 2nd & then the driver side. On the 81 the rear deck carpet over laps the front floor carpet pieces behind the seats, so you don't glue these until last, after you have fitted the storage compartment door assembly. You can fold them back out of the way for now. I used the MFGR prescribed gluing method. Double checking fit in the fender wheel areas and rear speakers, etc. Glue only the deck section behind the storage door opening, especially if you are waiting for a new pre-assembled storage door assembly.Front carpet floor pieces comes with a re-enforcement strip that fits under the door sill strip, which pretty much forces you to start at the doors and work in to the tunnel. I reccomend over laying old carpet on top the new carpet to mark varies mtg holes with a piece of white chalk. Getting all the dirt & old carpet, adhesive cleaned out insures a good new carpet fit. Verify mtg holes once the carpet is laid in before making any cuts. Used 3M Carpet & Trim spray adhesive, tack time is 30 seconds and work time up to 2 hrs. Basicly, I first glued the recycled floor pan sound reduction piece on the passenger side. Test fitted the passenger carpet, verified alinement, then applied glue the front half of the carpet, using mfgr procedure, waited 30 sec before mating the carpet to the floor. Work from the center outward, smooth by hand, hold in place for ~ two minutes. Repeat process to the remaining un-glued carpet. I found using an awl or similar pointed round tool to confirm mtg hole location once carpet is glued, then cut out just the right amount of carpeting to allow un-restricted mtg bolt entry. Reinstalling seat belt, seats and other items in the correct sequence is vital to minamize wasted time. Taking digital pictures before and during the removal of the old carpet pieces really make life easier when you start putting things back together. Allow glue to set over night before mtg seats and the like.
I didn't glue the fender wells until the floor had setup, so I could get in there and work the carpet into all the small tighter places. I didn't make any final cuts on the storage door area until I had the new door assy in-hand to verify how much carpet needed to be fitted down under and around the door frame. I ordered my door assy from Corvette Mike here in SoCal, it took an additional week for it to arrive. The frame mtg holes were in slightly different places than the old door, had to drill some new holes in the deck frame. Other wise it fit like a glove and so did the carpet set from Mid -America, with only minor trimming behind the seats and behind the tunnel side panels to clear it's mtg holes.

Thanks Chuck....

The carpeting I bought from Wally Knoch.....The front pretty much fit right in as did the side tunnel pieces and the kick panels. The back has been a "bear" to say the least. I am about 90% done the job. Here's a few pics of the job.
Thanks,

Andy

since I'm helping Andy with his carpet project, I'll confirm what he says. the front carpet went very easily but the rear carpet.............. has turned out to be a real b*tch to say the least.
We are using the carpet from Al Knoch Interiors and while I know he makes top quality stuff I'm not sure what happened here. Maybe we got a piece for the back that was just cut unusually very poorly or what, but the fit on that rear piece is nothing short of horrible and it's fighting us every step of the way.

Morning all...Carpet job/interior replacement is done. Here is a link to the site where you can see the before and after.

The door jam pieces you are talking about. Are they at the rear of the jam?I'm thinking you are talking about the water devter piece is this right or am I off in left field as usual? I got my carpet set from Al Knok.I don't really need it yet but from the looks of it I'm not in a hurry to do it.I've replaced carpet in Camaros.Trans Am's and such. Those cars are a piece of cake!!!

Well, the job is done.....WHEW!!!!!!!!! Now working on my brakes and trying to put on another steering wheel....thats another story...but..

as soon as u open the door, look where the small metal water divertor is located past the sill plates . The piece that runs vertical up the side of the door jamb on the inside. Apparently they only put these pieces on 1979 1980 models..I found a pair at an all corvette salvage yard called contemporary corvette..spent $20.00. They were in OK shape..really didn't matter, becasue the felt edge of the carpet was to be wrapped around them anyway.
