New here, just sold my 1951 vw and took the cash and bought a very presentable complete nice driving 1954 Vette. Now I am on the quest to verify the numbers and see where I stand on this car. Where will I find the casting number on the block? Is the stamped number near the starter just the engine serial number?. I know the engine has the correct head. I have been all around and under the car and it seems to be very unmolested and has had only minor damage in the past. Thank you in advance.

The casting number is located on the passengers side of the block, in a recess, in front of the fuel pump. The original block should be a "911" casting.

The casting date is above the starter. Should be in the format of "A 1 4", where A is January, 1 is the first day of the month, and 4 is the year.

The stamp pad should contain a 7 digit number, followed by
F54YG. The YG suffix is the Corvette block. The 7 digit number will show the first 5 numbers stamped in a gang stamp. They will be even. The next 2 numbers are stamped individually, and will not line up with the others. The F54YG is stamped in a gang stamp, and will be even. SO, if you count them up, that stamp pad got "whacked" 4 times. The 7 digit number has NO relationship to the SN of the car. Give me the block number and the car SN. "USUALLY", lower numbers go with lower casting dates, and lower SN cars. Chuck

Numbers

Chuck,
My numbers are as follows the "911" casting number is 3835911. The casting date is "E14".
and the engine serial stamped as you said it would be is 0643784F54YG. The Vin number inside the drivers door jamb is E54S003984. I think I am OK as all numbers are where they are supposed to be. Now to get the coil in the correct place, get the generator rebuilt, rebuild the wonderbar radio and get the tach working. I usually do more research before buying but the owner and I have friends in common and I took him at his word, and the car was just so cool I just said I will take it.

Sounds like you've got a winner. The casting date of E14 is May 1st. 1954. You have the 2984th out of 3640 Corvette's built in 1954, and although there are no build records, I would guess that this car was built in late May...early June. The engine SN falls in line with a casting date of E. Good luck with it. Chuck

Welcome abourd Andy and good luck with your new car

Welcome Andy,

Looks like you picked a winner. Enjoy your '54.

Tom
