Hi guys,

Does anybody know for sure what kind of catalytic converter my 1990 C4 (L98) would have? I have heard that C4 had two-way converter until 1992 LT1 came with "modern" three-way converter. Is this true?

Here in Finland our emission regulation have changed and all three-way catalytic converter cars have to pass much lower emissions, but if L98 had older two-way converter then I can keep cruising without any converters....and engine works MUCH better=)

I have to wait here almost two weeks to find out, because our import dealer`s engineer/specialist ´comes back in next month. I try to find out if its useless to wait him. This if my car has a threeway converter.

I am not sure what you mean by three way converter, but will tell you what is on my 90. There is a converter in each exhaust pipe just after it comes off the exhaust manifold. The two pipes come together in a Y and connect to another single, larger converter. Then behind that converter is another Y pipe going to two mufflers and tailpipes. The large converter has an airpipe going into it from the underhood air pump. Hope this helps.

I have been told, but have never confirmed, that the system on early C4's is a three way system with the main cat being a two way oxidation catalyst for CO and hydrocarbons and the precats begin the reduction catalyst for NOx.

Ok thanks, I still have check this with GM but looks that I have to change my exhaust system every year once. this because here in Finland we have to every year go our "DMV" office and they check our cars that they are proper condition and street legal also. And they also measure emissions and now I should restore all catalytic converters says the law=( We have many ridiculous rules here in Finland=)

I don't know what the specific laws are over there but I would ask if you could put on a 3-way, get a regular front y-pipe, and see if it meets the requirements. Maybe you can get out of having to buying the precats every year.
