I am getting a lot of heat on the passenger side, especially next to the center console. It get so hot that the carpet is melting little by little. How can I fix this? It is an 86 coupe. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to CAC. Possible restriction in the converters. How many miles?

I removed the rear y pipe yesterday and looked inside the catalytic converter. The "honey comb" is complete in one piece, however it is not attached to anything. Basically it moves freely inside. Is this normal? Could this be causing heat build-up in the front y pipe?

Thanks

GM never made a "floating" catalytic converter. You should check into installing a high-flow converter in place of your OEM one.

SAVE THE :w!

On a 1986-1991, the secondary converter has two honeycome elements inside with an air injector in the middle (goes to air pump). These elements should not be floating around. If this converter is bad, I wonder what the status is of the front two pre-cats. Dynomax makes a front y-pipe with no precats and a 3 way converter that is EPA approved for around $300.
