Does anyone know how to install the center ( cardboard like material) back in the rear compartment unit.

I believe you have to completely remove the plastic frame work that holds the hinges and three doors. I learned the hard way, got it all put back together and forgot to install the inserts.
Good luck,
Jim

Agree. It goes in before the frame.

I replaced the one on my 79 when i did a complete restore on the interior, also the outside frame needs to come out and it might be broker or break coming out ( Twenty years old thin plastic) and you might want to replace it with a new unit. i got mine from Mid-America and it was well mad and fit perfectly, however if you've replaced the carpet in the back you need to take some time and fit the compartment frame in carefully with the new carpet. A mild heat gun works well with the new carpet.
