Just wanted to drop a thank you to the board. After much input from many people here I decided to replace the rusted out stock exhaust on my 71 with a chamberred exhaust. (I'm not sure if I can mention the vendor or not but it wasn't the catalog guys.)

Boy if you like a loud sidepipe type growl you'll get it with this type of exhaust. I was a greasy mess when I was done so I had my wife start the car at 9:30 last night. She just grinned and kept gunning the engine. Stuff literally started falling off the walls in my garage. The neighbors aren't pleased with me either :).

If you want fun sound that will make you feel like a kid again you'll love this. My only worry is whether it's going to prove too loud for me over time or not.

Thanks again to everyone who gave me input.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.
I've had mine for about 2 years and love it! My husband has about 40% and 50% hearing loss in both ears and we are still able to have a conversation in the 78 while driving at town and hwy speeds. Neither of us speak when we are accelerating...because we both like listening to the sweet sounds of the exhaust! :D

Heidi,

Thanks. You're actually one of the people that convinced me to go this route. You seem to love it so much I couldn't resist. I also saw your post on the Qjet rebuild. I need to do mine as well. Everything I read is actually pretty positive on the Qjet. I'm going to try it myself. The kits aren't that much and if you pay attention to detail you should be fine.

Thanks for your advice on the exhaust.

I noticed on Ebay that there is a new company which makes a type of chambered exhaust for an '81 and similar style exhaust systems. It looks like a chambered exhaust section picks up just before the current mufflers are and replaces them---I simply removed my '81's mufflers and ran the pipes back long ago (the catalytic converter cuts out lots of noise on its own). It would be interesting to see how this works----I found it on Ebay by searching "1981 Corvette" and contacted the owner of the company.

Chris,

Probably the same guys I bought my kit from. The shop I used actual OEM's the pipes for the big catlog companies. I just took it out for a break in cruise and I am extremely happy. PM me with the name of the company you used. I'm kinda interested to see if they're the same.

Actually, my message was a bit confusing----I do not use the chambered mufflers, but simply removed the mufflers and ran the pipes back. The catalytic converter cuts a lot of noise. Sorry for the confusion.

I just put a chambered exhaust system on my 1973 corvette a couple of weeks ago. My former exhaust had seen "better days" so the time to change made sense. All I can say is WoW! I haven't had this much fun driving a street car since I was 16......almost 25 years ago. The sound of the exhaust at idle is great with a slightly rowdy cam.....and only gets better as you accelerate. The nice growl it gives at highway cruising speed is music to my ears.....and the way it sounds when you decelerate sure gets people's attention. It was a fairly simple installation with a minimal amount of swearing involved....and no cut fingers or scraped knuckles. I took the advice of other members raving about their chambered exhaust........and am certainly glad that I did! I gotta run and go fire her up again........
