My brother is thinking of changing his 2:73 rear end to a 3:42. I was wondering if anyone has made that change and what they thought of the results good or bad. Also what the cost of such a chnge was.

Well...

It kind of depends upon whether he's planning on using it in competition/dragging. Aftermarket units run $1300-$2000 with suitable exchange. That's not installed, of course.

You can probably get used units for less, but you'd be taking a big chance for not much savings. If the rear end goes at speed, it can get ugly fast.

It'd probably cut the quarter mile time by half a second or so.

The downside is that it'll increase the revs necessary to go any speed by 25% and the speedometer will be way wrong, requiring recalibration.

To an extent, it depends upon what else he's already done to the car. If he hasn't done much, there are probably more efficient ways of approaching the problem.
