For a '71 with large ID fuel filler neck:

If a person could get a hand through fuel filler neck, into the tank and onto the pickup ... can the strainer/sock be changed while sender-pickup remains in place?

BTW ... sender works great, tank's clean as a pin w/ no leaks ... needs only a sock.

I wouldn't try it that way, Jack. I just did mine.

The strainer (sock) is to a metal collar with a round bore (ID). This bore has a medium press fit onto the fuel pickup tube. You first need to twist the old one off the tube, and press the new one back onto the tube.

If you were doing this blind (as your question suggests), I would be very concerned about distorting the tube, or even worse bending the swinging arm for the float itself.

Draining the tank and removing the sending unit is not a big deal. Just install a new o-ring and cam lock ($2 each at the Last Detail), and you'll be good to go.

I got sock, o-ring & camlock. Was able to reach thru fuel fill neck and replace sock with very little difficulty and no damage to anything. Was able to finangle a small pair of channelocks in there too.
