Changing Color on an 85

I just bought an 85 for a really good price.Granted I had to have a couple of things fixed and it is in desperate need of new paint. The car only has 80k on it, was formerly owned by someone that worked at the Holley factory who put all kinds of Holley performance parts on it including a pair of Holley aluminum heads. What do you think about changing colors on the car? I have always liked black rose, and every other one that you see is red like mine. If I have the color changed to black rose will it hurt the value in the long run (i know these arent appreciating much but there is wishful thinking)? I live in Bowling Green KY so I figured I had to have a vette!

Changing color on ANY car is a big deal if you want to do it right, but on a Vette it would REALLY be a big deal. The trim and other things that would have to be removed to do this correctly would close to double the job.

If you're looking for an NCRS Top Flight award or other honors based on originality, changing colors would definitely not be good.

Changing colors to suit you would not detract from the value of the car for normal resale if the repaint is done correctly.

Changing colors is a big deal as said above. To do it right, the door jam areas, under the hood, around the rear hatch, etc would have to be repainted also. I had that done on a '92 several years ago and the painter removed the mirrors and head lights and painted them separate from the rest of the car. He also removed the front turn signals and fog lights and the rear tail lights. To paint the door jams and rear hatch area, the whole interior had to be masked off. Lots of work but worth it as far as I was concerned.

Color change comes into play if you are trying to maintain originality, or going to have the car Judged at cars shows.

But it's your car and you can do what you want.



I have done color changes on several cars and it's a pain. I do all of the paint and body work myself and have bodyshop pricing, so it's not to bad for me, But if you have to have it all done, get ready, it can get expensive.

So you might have more money in the car than what it is worth now and it might be years before you would recoup the cost.

But , as I said on another post. I quit counting the money and time years ago on my "hobby".

And I wonder if the old saying might help, "resale red"

I would repait it red, it will piss you off if you find a spot they missed in a door jam or if you flip up your headlights and have red head lights.

I would definately NOT change the color!

To do a same color paintjob on a Vette is big $$$, if you change the color it will be even bigger $$$$$$$!

I would get it resprayed the proper color (what torch red?) and it will help the value of the car, and it will look really nice.
