I have ordered a new Rotor and Distributor Cap for my 1982 Vette.

I have read about how to change these and also removing the coil assembly. Is there any tips or techniques anyone can give me before I tackle this.

It looks straight forward but your guys input has been very valuable in the past !!

Thanks, Tom

A good back-up tip, is to simply crank the engine, watch the rotation of the rotor (cap is off) and line up the timing marks on the crank balancer and the static mark on the timing cover. The rotor should be facing approx. 11 o'clock. Looking at the rotor's position would be as if you were, standing on the roof of the car, looking down at the distributor. This is #1 spark plug. Double check by reinstalling the old rotor with wires still attached. Follow that plug lead that now rests on the 11 o'clock position rotor, and that should be the #1 plug wire. Now you have a base to work with. Find the firing order numbers that are cast-in on the intake manifold. You remembered the rotation or the rotor? Just reinstall the plug wires as you read off the intake numbers, in a 360 degree direction. 1-8-4-3-and so on. Hope this helped.

Thanks ZR-1 for for input and dis-assembly and assembly technique's for the distributor. I appreciate and will you your technique this weekend to replace the Distributor and Rotor.

As far as the plug fire order and all the rest. I appreciate the advice but I like to keep it simple for now. Maybe some day I will get into the technical aspect more.

A little trick in remembering the firing order of a SBC is start with the number 18, double it to 36, double that to 72, the only two numbers left are 4 and 5. Insert the 4 between the first pair of numbers and the 5 between the second and you end up with:
18 4 36 5 72 and there you have the firing order.
Just my 2 cents :m :Steer :v

the little plastic pieces for tying up bread packages work great for numbering wire. find one and work your way around..

good luck

Honestly when doing my wires i label them with tape and small pieces of paper. That way you will be sure to have it right. Then just hookem up to the new cap and your done.
