Cheap power for '77 Vette

All right, it would seem that you guys don't recommend that a newbie like me mess with the numbers-matching engine. If I go for a crate engine, I'll have a shop install it; I'm quite busy, and I can't sink hundreds of hours into learning how to perform an engine swap. What's the approximate labor cost of putting in a crate engine and all the requisite new parts?

Also, will the GM 330/350 HO Deluxe get me the performance I'm looking for? How do they get the advertised 330HP? Does that number assume a free-breathing exhaust and a good set of headers, or will the installation of the aforementioned result in higher output? Also, if I decide later on down the road that I want more power, is it a solid foundation? I like it because it's cheap and looks well-built, and the more powerful engines cost a pretty penny. Is a "circle-track" 355HP or 400HP worth the extra cash? They have aluminum heads, among other goodies, but they're a few thousand dollars more. I know I can get my grubby fingers on the 330/350 Deluxe for around $3,800 (contains everything from oil pan to Holley carburetor).

*edit* Also, will a high-stall torque converter seriously affect the everyday drivability of the car? I'm confused...

If you lived close-by to me it would cost you a case of beer. :beer But seriously, expect to pay 10 - 12 shop labor hours (at $65 - $90 an hour)

I would tend to trust the output claims more from GM-Goodwrench.

A true 9.5:1 CR engine is useful for your goal, but be wary of wild claims without the facts.

Look around and search for engine combinations (a.k.a. Combos). Spend a few hours reading what goes into making that power. Then feel comfortable when you spend your money on the right choice engine combination for you.

i have a 77 vette with the l-48. I pulled the motor. Re-built the heads, cleaned out the intake, put new water pump, timing chain, rebuilt carb. etc etc. didnt do nothing to the bottom end other then clean it. Installed hooker sidepipes.

Anyways I have raced numerous mustangs, dodge stealth twin turbo, a 78 with 383 stroker, 68 firebird with a new beefed up 350 and 78 trans am manual beefed up 350.

Anyways none of these cars could lose or beat me. And the firebird blew his engine. Maybe its just cause they didnt know how to drive.:D

I dont know how many civis, cavaliers, grand prixs, sunfires, sunbirds, etc etc. I dont even bother anymore with those.:rotfl

Running an automatic. Hold down on the brakes and rev that baby up to 2500. Then lettttttthhheheeerererere rip.
