PLease help,
Just got the car back from the body shop after a small front end mishap with a Maxima. Drove about 30 miles and the Check Engine Light came on. She was in the body shop just over a week. I checked the obviuos, ie. gas cap, loose connectors to the intake, everything looked good. Not sure how to check codes, so please help with my next step
TRhanx in advance~

Get your pad and pencil handy.
Do the above steps and be fast.
The codes flash out all the modules at a rate of 1 every 3 seconds, so be prepared to turn the key off and repeat the "options"+ "fuel 4 times" procedure until you can copy all the codes off the DIC.
Don't reset anything.
History codes will end in "H"(which means it happened in the past, but not right now) but if your check engine light is still on, it will be an active code.
Just get all the codes and let us know what you find if you still need help interpreting them.:)

Pete, I think it is possible to cycle through the codes manually at one's own pace too... check out this post from the thread mentioned above.

Very useful post !!

I had reason to pull codes tonight. Some additional info to supplement Patrick's original post that I found useful:

H = history (may be a solved or intermittent malfunction)
C = current

Manual mode can be entered at any time during the automatic sequence by pressing any button except "E/M"

Once the DIC displays "manual diagnostics", you may select a particular module by pressing "options" button to go forward or "trip" button to go backwards

Once a module is displayed and has codes for review, you may view the codes individually by pressing "gages" button to go forward and "fuel" button to go backwards (to review at your own pace and write down)

To exit the diagnostics mode at any time push "E/M" button

Yes, but after automatically cycling through the modules it enters "manual" mode, where you can manually go forward of back by pressing OPTIONS or TRIP respectively. You can also force manual mode by pressing RESET at any time.

Not necessarily. Many codes require a number of successful ignition cycles w/o the DTC failing before extinguishing the CEL (aka, MIL). For example, the common P0101 code:
"The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail."

Thanx everyone. I found code P0410 current and a few History codes and some that started with"U". I cleared all codes and 2 days later the P0410 code came back. Now, I'll search this forum for possible solutions and repairs. Of course, all responses are welcome and appreciated.

The P0410H code is the AIR pump or check valves.
Listen to hear the AIR pump turn on at startup. It is located below the drivers side headlamp. It should stay on for 2 minutes after a cold start.
The check valves are on each head under the intake manifold at the rear. You have to pull the manifold to get replace them.
Front end collision huh? I'm betting the pump got whacked or the hose is pinched or ruptured.

I knew I was forgetting something.
And I knew I had done it manually before, but couldn't find it in the procedure.
Thanks Mr. Lucky and Jane Ann

Yep, that's the most likely explanation. Maybe a bit of a long-shot, but it's also possible that the collision dislodged some piece of crud and a check valve is stuck closed. If you feel lucky, you can try spraying some penetrating oil or WD-40 down the hose toward the valve and let it sit overnight. Really soak it. It won't hurt anything, and it may just "fix" it. In any event, the code, though annoying, is harmless. It is strictly an emissions thing.

Here is the service manual info on that code for your 2001.
