Checking/changing oil in 4+3 O/D

Hi guys and gals, I posted this question in another thread and have searched for forty minutes trying to find it again. So here it is. I just bought an '85 with the 4+3. It is difficult to get into reverse and I read in another thread that low O/D fluid could be the cause. Is this the case? and how/where do I check the fluid level and / or add more?

I don't know about the ATF part, but I know for a fact that if you're low on 90 wt. it won't go in reverse.

Do yourself a favor and change the fluid (ATF) in the OD unit. Since you just got itI don't think you know when it was last changed. These units like it and run 100% better when the fluid is clean. You will need to order a filter from one of the online dealers such as http://www.tld-corvette.com/ part # 605372. What you do is jack ot up, drop the pan, change the filter/screen and rubber gromit. Put the pan back up and fill it with ATF until it overflows the plug hole on the side. You may want to get a small pump for the ATF, you can get that at Advanced Auto.

Both tranny sections have the standard fill plugs on their sides. Fill until it runs out and then you're set.

Thanks guys, I just got it running smooth after it sat for two and a half years. Now I'm starting on the tranny. I appreciate everyone's advice.

I also had reverse issues. Which were solved by draining (not flushing) the gear fluid. The following link tells what I went through.
