Choice of Plugs

Just purchased my first Corvette and I am about to do the usual tune up stuff. I am wondering about plug choices. Is anyone using platinum? Bosch?

What would be the ideal choice for an '89 L98?:r

My Corvette tech explained to me that the bosch plugs don't work well in 'Vettes... He said he would put them in if I wanted, and he would be happy to change them (and charge me) again in 20k miles.... He stands by the GM platinum plugs... they are pricey, but he said he would replace them for free if I had a problem before I rebuilt my engine (I had about 90k on a '93 LT1 at the time)

I use NGK plugs.

bosch platinum

I agree with your mech. bosch are great for rice cars I put them in my wife eclipse and they are great but for american cars with v8's they just dont work that good. They seem to foul out rather quickly from what I have seen. Good luck.

I have tried them all...but what works in my vette is the Bosch +4 plugs. The car starts better, idles smoother and I get a bit more out of a gallon of gas. And, unlike other plugs, you never have to gap them.

Bosch +4's here too! They were kinda pricey at $6 a plug, but skimping on maintenance stuff isn't recommended. I like the fact that they're platinum and that they do not need to be gapped. I'm using them with Delco wires and the combo has treated me well so far, been about 4 months. Definitely smoother but I couldn't say if there is a power increase.

Bosch platinum + 4 here also, used them in my Saleens also, no probs.

Thanks for the input! My daughter's car (not a Corvette) has had some Autolite platinum plugs in it and we have had problems. The plugs run hot and we have had to retard the base timing to avoid the ping monster.

I like the longevity of platinum plugs and the idea about not having to gap them appeals to me too. I think I may try the +4's and will report back with what I find.

I really appreciate this forum...the info here has already helped me to solve a couple of problems. Thanks again!

Don't forget to get a nice quality set of wires as well.

I figure if the 4 pronged plugs were that great, GM would have started making them and putting them in at the factory... after all, even 1 MPG means a big tax break to a big car manufacturer, and their current plugs sell for about $8 each, so cost isn't an issue.

Actually aircraft engines have used the 4 prongs a very long time.
And as you can see there are many of us on here that do use them and have had great results. I have tried them and endorse the results. To each his own....

Bosch platium + 4's here in the 84 CF and the ZR-1 seem to work fine. ZR-1 runs the same as it did with the FR2LS AC's no noticable power increase. Average fuel mileage with power key on "it's always on," 29.9 @ 75 mph in 6th gear. 84 CF 91 ZR-1
