has anyone had a problem with the upper hose blowing off a chrome thermostat
housing under pressure?

I have used them for many years on all kinds of muscle cars that I've owned. If you are talking about the ones with the o-ring gasket.I've never had any problems.A lot of people say they leak and maybe theirs did but I bought quite a few and never had one leak or "blow"off.

yes those are the one's im talking about
tonight while out for a drive, it blew off on the highway.

I agree, mine has been fine, has Stainless Steel hose clamp @ housing.
Hey Flame, are you sure its not that your just running hot? (like really hot).

After you tighten the hose clamp and the engine warms up, go back and retighten the clamp again. The other solution, not recommended, is to apply a small amount of clear silicone to the inside of the hose where it contacts the t-stat housing and then clamp. Go back after warm up and re-tighten clamp again. Also check Rad. cap to see if it is relieving the pressure build up in your system.

i've had one on my BB el camino for a couple of years (along with a chrome long waterpump). when i was thinking about installing them both, a couple of old hot rod guys told me to be safe, they always kind of "rough up" the male hose ends on all the pieces with a piece of fine sandpaper or emery cloth to provide the necessary adhesion. i took their word for it and did it, (that part of the fitting is never seen because the hose will cover it) and haven't had any problems at all with any of the hose connections. BTW the 454 el camino is my daily driver and my round trip daily is about 80 miles at highway speeds.

i did do the things you suggested, put on some high temp RTV,even scuffed up the nipple so it would have a tooth to grab on to,plus new clamp.but i didn't think about the pressure. maybe the cap is bad. i'll replace it today.
thanks guys

Double-clamp it. Use 2 clamps, side-by-side ... racers do it.
