Cigarette Smoke

ad How do you rid a car of cigarette smoke smell? I purchased a 2000 a few months ago and I've been trying to get the smell out...ugh!! Is there anything people have used to get rid of this smell...thanks.

Ozium is pretty good at getting out smoke... if you haven't tried that one yet, give it a shot.

It's built for people who want to smoke cigars/cigarettes and hide the smell from their spouses.

I'm not exactly sure where to get it, but you should be able to order it online or find it at Wal-mart.

My '79 was covered with nicotine throughout the interior. I decided to disassemble the entire car to get rid of the smokey smell and clean everything out. When I got to bear floor I found ashes under the carpet and console. I used a pet odor spray in the air ducts, under the carpet and inside the seat cushions. I shampooed the carpet with the pet cleaner added. That helped greatly. All of the vinyl parts and leather parts were then rubbed with enamel reducer (quick dry) to remove the stains. Now that everything is reassembled, there is no smell anywhere. It was a lot of work, but I wanted to be thorough.

I've never tried this but they say that placing a dryer sheet (e.g., Bounce) in the car will eventually remove most of the smell. You may need more than one depending how bad the smell is.

My truck had a bit of that stench in it when I got it. I put two flow-through boxes of arm&hammer in it after a complete scrubbing and after about a week, the smell was gone.

When I got my '79 it had a light smell of cigarrette smoke and since the previous owner did not smoke it was a longer lasting smell.

I kept both windows open while the car was in the garage for three months and now with the car closed up I use a fresh laundry sheet like Bounce every month.

That worked, no smell. Now if I could only get rid of the two cigarrette burns in the carpet I would be really happy!

The interior is leather so I think that helps somewhat in removing odors. You smell the leather and the Luxol I put on the seats.

The worst part of smoke is that it goes into every nook and cranny you can imagine. You know how it coats ones lungs? That's what it's done inside the veintillation system in the car as well as each fiber of the carpet.

It's essentially an oil so you'll need to break down the oil. But as much as you can clean you may not be able to 100% remove it. If you have alergies you'll also want to be careful with what you put in there.

Many products simply mask it. What have you tried so far?

Before you try anything else... for 4$ you can get a bottle of Febreeze for autos. Spray everything down well, and make sure to get in the air vents. May need a 2nd shot. This got rid of the smell in my Trans Am after I quit smoking.

I agree, the frebreez stuff does wonders for cigarett smoke.

I'd try gid of the odor rather than add a new one. The tar will still be coating everything in the car. Meguiar's makes a fantastic interior cleaner for doing just this....... I'll see if I can find a link to the product.

Da febreeze actually breaks down the contaminants in the fibers.... that's how it gets rid of the odors. for 4$ its worth spraying and see if it helps. I hate scrubbing interior.

Have used Downey Dryer Sheets for years to get rid of body shop smells in customers vehicles. Clean as much of the interior as you possibly can, including as one member said, to use pet carpet sprinkle before you vaccum the carpets. Then put a couple Downey sheets under each seat and other places in the car.
