Has anyone had this problem? I cleaned my motor yesterday and today when I started driving it, my check engine light came on. My 88 was idling high already. (about 1100-1200 at the stoplight) I stopped and checked the code and it was 33. When the light came on, the car almost stalled and ran kind of rough. I checked the code and let it sit a few minutes. When I started it again and drove it, no check engine light and it ran all right - except the idle is still high. Any suggestions? Oh, and getting something wet that shouldn't have gotten wet is not out of the question.

Dont know much about that model year, but my manual says that a code 33 is mass air flow for 85 thru 90 model years. It suggest inspecting the intake system for air and vacuum leaks. Also the maf sensor connections and circuit. Hope this helps.

May as well replace the MAF relays anyway, they are only about $15 each and are suggested maintenence items. There is a step-by-step at C4vettes.com and here on the CAC forums. Easy, 1 hour job and won't hurt. There is a chance further drying time will cure the problem anyway, but you should really be careful washing your engine and wipe down with a cloth only if you can get away with it.

My 88 had code 33. THe price of the MAF is $300 +. I replaced both the MAF power relay and the burn off relay, both sit behind the battery and are the same part numbers. Cheap repair, the light never came on. Glad I did not go for the MAF sensor first.

You probably knocked loose some of the MAF ducting or got the MAF damp inside. Don't do anything to dry the MAF beyond taking loose ducting and letting it air dry. This piece is delicate inside.

The burn off relay is probably more prone to early failure because it deals with more current. The replacements are indeed better, but I personally would not replace them as a preventive maintenance step. I would keep a new, updated relay on hand, since it is used for several different things.

Good luck,
