I have a pair of Corvette headlight covers or shields as they are called on the box for a 68 & up Corvette. The GM part number on the box is 3961465. Anyone know what these cost new and what they might be worth now?
Thanks

Can you post a picture so we can see exactly?

I don't know that part number, but if I can see them, I will know which ones they are.

Make sure your pic is less than 65 kb, and is a : gif jpg png txt zip bmp jpeg, format and it will attach to this thread with ease.

Do they look like these?

Attached is a picture of the headlight covers.
Thanks for the interest.

What they are worth...I don't know.

However, I have been told that they are no longer in production.

I know that Bob Wallace of Vette Magazine was search for a pair last year for a project street race car.

Those are very valuable since they are original GM and no longer in production. I would guess you could get at least $200-$250 for the pair. You can get new reproductions made from the original GM molds. I bought the entire FIA headlight setup (aluminum buckets, plexiglass covers) for my car for about $750 from a guy in the Detroit area. I was super excited to find out I could get a set of FIA headlights. I didn't like the square lights with the fiberglass buckets like Eckler's sells, and I really wanted to make my car look like a race car from the early 70's.

69autoXr, that's exactly what I'm trying to accomplish. I bought the aluminum buckets at a swap meet last year. Unfortunatly the guy didn't have the covers. Also, I had to cut out the aluminum buckets to fit in small round headlights (72' Datsun from the local junkyard). I hope the bulbs are good as none of the parts stores seem to carry bulbs that small. They are kind of hanging out in the breeze for now. At least until I can find someone to part with those covers. The ones Ecklers sells for $200 are flat. I like the look of these better.

Unfortunatly I had already sold the stock set up and didn't have the capsules that hold the bulb and bolt to the aluminum bucket. I had to get pretty fancy with some bracketry to get the datsun bulbs/trim rings in, but finally I figured out how to make it work. I wish my camera was better so I could show some close ups. My bulbs fit flush against the buckets. I guess I also saved about a pound on the front by not having the capsules/having smaller bulbs. Yours looks looks good too!

Thanks. Recently I've done a bit of restoration work on the stock pieces, just so they would look better. I sand blasted and painted the bulb cups, purchased new adjuster springs and screws, and acquired a set of the stainless bulb retainer rings that were in much better condition than mine. I also clear coated the buckets with a matte clear, as I didn't want the bare aluminum to oxidize in a year or two. But I wanted to maintain the look of the bare aluminum, that's why I used the matte clear, so it wouldn't look glossy.

I tried to paint mine the same way after blasting them. I ended up going with a flat black becuse it kind of made the lights "float" there from a distance. I think yours looks good too because you do have the capsules. Do you already have the covers for yours? are they the flat plexi ones or are they the bubble ones like in this thread?

Bubbles, of course! I wanted the factory setup, and also, the tops of the bulbs extend over the top of the fiberglass, so I neede the bubbles.

Yeah, that's what I would have done (if I had the capsules) I might end up going with the flat ones if I can't find anyone to sell the bubbles. The bubbles do look cooler if you ask me. So, do you have anymore pics of your car? All I've seen is your front end. I think I have the same hood as you too. Does the scoop come all the way back close to your windshield? I had to remove the cowl/wiper door to put that hood on.

You can get the bubble covers from Tracy Performance in Roseville MI www.tracyvette.com. I don't think the bubble covers are listed on the website though, you'd have to call. I think that yours might look better with the flat covers if your bulbs don't extend above the fiberglass.

Here are some pics of my car, although it isn't completely put together as it's in for paint. I do have the long L88 hood.

Here's another.

One more.

Thanks for the pic and info. If the bubbles are too expensive, I will stick with the flat ones. Good luck with your car!

It looks neat in the flat black primer. I've given thought to painting mine with the flat looking "blue suede" I've seen on some hot rods at the shows. I'd like to see it once you get it painted and the bubbles back on. I looked on the tracy vette site and intend to contact them about the lense. Thanks for the info & pic.

Here is a recent shot with new paint and the headlights. It's hard to see the bubbles because they're clear, but they're on there.
